Not Thinking Things Through :(

Yep, then finally DJs might stop thinking of themselves as bloody musicians and go back to being people that simply play records :p ;)

i have no issue with that at all.

So on one hand you are arguing for "sound quality", then on the other you want hiss and crackle?  :D

it's about soul, bees, and judging by the shite you listen to, you have NONE :p

But some are, as they do make their own music as well...

Some also don't see themselves as musicians and realise that they are just playing records...

Nice snobbish generalisation though ;)

If there's one thing digital (download) files predominantly make redundant it's cds. I think vinyl's recovery will continue a little longer - it's the most 'different' physical format, better artwork, warmer sound, far more collectible.

CD is tomorrow's compact cassette. Vinyl will remain the collector and enthusiast's choice.

Make your mind up then, which do you want, quality, or soul? :p

a warm, bassy sound with some crackles and pops to give it some 'feel'.

the two aren't mutually exclusive, as anyone but a fool would realise.

and in so doing, surely the notion of DJ as anything other than someone who just sticks tunes on (like what I do) pretty much becomes redundant?
not really - the setup I describe is just an easier tool for the same sort of performance that a good dance DJ can give - bringing tunes in and out, creating new music out of two tunes, fucking about with filters and mixing etc. The end result is the same.

As for DJs who 'just sticks tunes on' - well, that's even simpler. With, again, the caveat being availability of the tunes you want to play being available on CD, the job can be done with itunes and a playlist you edit on the fly. All that scrabbling around on the floor for records, finding the start of the track, checking levels etc. - it's all needless effort and can be automated.

like bees, you have no soul

But crackles and pop aren't "feel", they're just an inherent limitation of the format. It's not like they'd be there on the orginal masters.

Surely the soul/feel of a track comes form what the musicians were doing in the studio that day? Don't you want any recording to be as close to that as is possible?

bullshit :) - the soul is in the music, not the technology used to bring it to your ears.

it's not bullshit. it's about a 'vibe'. It's not something that can be easily explained, or worked out in a fucking graph ( :p ) but it's still real.

Option A: Jah Shaka in a dark, hot room playing crackly versions on 7 and 10" on his old Russian turntable balanced on a bread crate, working his analogue siren and effects.

Option B: Jah Shaka in a shiny stylish room playing pristine tunes from a laptop and using a Kaos pad.

there's no choice if you have any soul

not necessarily no, but you're never going to understand why. You stick to your soulless four to the floor techno played off USB card, ok? :D

But can anyone beat me carrying all this to the Albert by hand in one go?

Numark CD1 2xCD/mixer combo + leads + power supply
2 x Stanton turntables + leads
Approx 50 LPs
Approx 75 45s
Large CD case (200CDs)
Headphones, lights etc

Admittedly it wasn't the longest of distances but the whole lot weighed a fucking ton and my arms were shaking for hours after.
