Not liking Music

It seems reasonable to me to argue that it is a 'hard-wired' response in some way to like music, but I don't think it follows that some people might not have that. If anything is definitely innate surely it is the instinct to procreate, but some people clearly don't have that - to similar amazement from those that do.

yes good example. Ties in with what I said about cognitive dissonance as well

I've met a few people who don't 'get' music. As someone who loves music and who is often driven or moved or whatever by it I found that odd.

I suppose it's impossible to say "I don't like music" unless you've listened to all genres/types

It is not impossible not to like music. I have listened to all genres of music but now I just don't like music anymore. Maybe it is my age. I am 55 and music is no longer important in my life. When I was younger I loved music and felt I couldnot live without it. Not liking music does not you lack personality. A lot of young people don't read and that doesn't mean they are stupid or hate books.
Some people no longer like the sound of music, plus music today is pretty bad.

My Dad doesn't really like music.

I have questioned him about this because I don't get it.

He never ever listens to music "on purpose".

The only music that he will refer to as something he likes is music from a certian period in his youth but it's the fact this music reminds him of this period in his life rather than the music itself that he likes.

How on earth can you walk around on earth and not occaissionally here a tune that makes you think - ohhh thats nice???
It is pretty easy to walk the earth without music. Just don't listen or ignore it. The only music in my life is tv or movie sounds or sound tracks. I just tone it out. I have a nice stereo I never use anymore. I listen to talk radio on a small radio. When people come in my home with music ringtones I ask them to take it outside or go home.

I think not having found any music you could actively appreciate would be a sorry kind of existence.

Pretty much on a par with those folk who "don't really like food" and I have met a few.

I am very happy and peaceful. I just don't care for music. The world can survive without it, civilization will not collaspe:cool:

But even if you don't like the music of today, don't you ever want to listen to the sort of music you liked when you were younger?

I find this quite odd. To like music when you were young, but not like it any more .....

I used to do the 'back down memory lane' stuff but that got old. Plus listening to the same couple songs on the radio is boring.

you wanna try searching out new stuff in genres you used to like. there's plenty of good stuff out there :) last.fm/spotify/festies are great for this.

Or perhaps try a whole new genre. I used to hate opera, but since I've got old, I really like it!
I have listened to just about every style and my father was a jazz musician and my cousin was a motown legend and grammy winner and I played violin. As I said I onced loved music. I just got over it is all. I guess the switch was just turned off:cool:

I have not turned on my stereo in about 5 years.

I'm a mere 6 years younger than you and I still enjoy listening to music from across a massive range of genres. My parents are in their 70s and are the same. I don't think it's a function of age, I suspect that it's a function of attitude and priorities. For example, I read and write better with music playing than not, so my attitude to music is "play on!".

Some music today is "bad", some music from every generation has always been "bad", crap or otherwise pointless. it doesn't mean that everything is.

Good point. All my family is older and still enjoy music also.

Good point. Music is not special, just a question taste and likes and dislikes.

That's a fairly glib comment that doesn't appear to be supported by the degree of importance attached to music. If music isn't special, why such an industry around the diffusion of music through sale, radio broadcasting etc? And of course we're not just talking about "popular" music here, we're talking about classical, about contemporary composition (or "modern classical" as I've heard some idiots referring to it ), about "golden age" music from the various decades of the 20th century across a rich variety of genres. Of course it's special, it's merely not special to everybody.

Keith, I reckon you'll rediscover your former love of music again one day. I'm also 55 and I don't listen to nearly as much as I used to, but occasionally I'll catch a bit of a prom concert on the telly, or inadvertantly flick over to something like 'Later with Jools Holland' and think; "that sounds absolutely amazing" and off I go for the next few hours listening to old cds or stuff on the computer. Then that'll be it for about a week or so.

I too have no doubt about the capacity for people to still love and be moved by music as they get older, my mum is 89, play her a bit of Schubert and she's in floods of tears after the first bar!

I just don't care about music anymore. Not a big deal.

Yeah maybe. I just got tired of the same old junk in the past ten years.
