Not allowed to carry tins of paint on bus

A mate of mine is a bus driver and she said it's down to spills and buses being taken out of service as a result but put them in a bag or box so the driver can't see 'em and you'll be OK.

I really wish they'd put notices on buses about this. Just been stuck on a bus in Streatham when two women refused to get off bus after bus driver told them they couldn't bring paint on.

Half the bus were having a go at the bus driver as well when he turned lights off and refused to move

They are complete cunts some day and they wonder why no one backs them up. The switching off the engineer behaviour just pisses me off. If someone won't do as they say call the cops but don't sit doing fuck all and expect me to be silent. After an 11 shift I'm never in the best of humour.

...I would add that a kid smeared summat sticky on a seat on a P5, someone made a fuss about it and the bus driver kicked everyone off and took the bus out of service. I was pretty pissed off as I had loads of shopping and where we were kicked off at was a busy stop and I knew it would be a big hassle getting on the next one. A curse upon the passenger who made a fuss

Oh, he told the rest of the bus why, but everyone was piping up that it wasn't an open tin. I think someone offered them a bag, but he still refused to move for a while.

If they had notices on buses stating they don't want paint carried, there'd be less of this shit. I always carry in a holdall now because I know better, but there's plenty that aren't aware of these instructions to drivers

I'm going to show this thread to Death Metal Magpie. A while ago I asked him to get me some paint from Acre Lane and told him if he was coming back on the bus to put it in a bag or he wouldn't be allowed to get on. He refused to believe there was any sort of issue with a tin of paint on a bus.

So did he have hassle then or put it in the bag?

Dunno really.

It's not practical for every last detail of the 'conditions of carriage' to be displayed prominently on buses, and if operators do try, you end up with notice overload and people don't read any of them.

Snag is, how many people who complain about not being allowed to carry paint on buses would make a fuss - and try to claim compensation from the bus operator - if they / their clothes ended up getting covered in paint because someone else was carrying an insecure tin of paint on a bus?

Oh, I understand the reasons for not allowing it, and as for information overload, I think most people being stuck into their iphones etc. nowadays are used to information (or notice) overload.

At least by having the notice up, the bus driver has a leg to stand on, whether the passenger has noticed the notice or not.

Your not allowed on our local buses with open booze..... I got kicked off for that on the one occasion I've taken a bus outside of london.

Fuck buses.

Well I can see a faulty tin of paint causing some damage, but why not inspect everyone getting on then to see if they're carrying marker pens :D

and there's still the question of why it's necessary if it's water-based paint

they probably just don't want to deal with the potential of it falling, opening up, and spilling all over the bus, which could easily happen if the bus stopped suddenly or something.

I remember when I was in art school I took a container of paint thinner in my wheelie travel case thingy on the train. I had put it up on the rack, and at some point the container started leaking. It was actually started leaking through the case and onto the back of my seat :oops:

If that was in the smoking section it could have caused a proper fire. Especially if it had leaked all over the shop before a fag butt was tossed on the floor.

Taking an unopened tin of emulsion that you need a screwdriver to open & is water based can't cause a major problem. It will be like the states and drinking with everyone going around with their paint pots in brown paper bags.:D

I don't know about other shops, but Decorator's Mate in Streatham always seal it with tape as well so it's even more secure

a) I am from the states and you haven't been allowed to smoke on a train in many, many years here. but it was still a stupid thing to do

b) I have worked in house painting. It is incredibly easy for paint cans to open, actually, especially if they fall onto the floor. I have seen many car and truck interiors that show long-term evidence of this. The mess from that would probably cost 1000's of pounds of damage to a bus, or train etc.

I understand that it's a hassle, but sometimes there are good reasons for rules. (sorry Minnie!)

Happened to me at Tottenham Hale about a year ago ...refused point blank entry onto the bus because of the paint ......buggered if I was going to pay for a cab home ...to I took the paint tub back to B&Q for a refund .....guy behind the till said it occasionally happens if the driver can see the tin .... wasn't all that bothered about the refund ..... I was vexed as it was a wasted hour and a half getting from the 'stow , picking the paint and getting back again ......

Would not be a problem for me as I live about two minutes from B&Q in Tottenham!

Maybe someone should start a paint delivery service. Like the old days of milkmen or bread.

Two tins of emulsion & one undercoat please.

I can understand flammable material or opened tins not being allowed but water based emulsion?

Last time I bought two large cans of emulsion from the Streatham Homebase, I was offered a carrier bag to put them in. Full marks to the cashier except that there was no way that even the strongest carrier bag was going to be manageable with that weight of paint inside it.

It's just as well that they fitted inside my rucksack. :D

I was once stopped taking a rolled up banner on the tube because it was an inch longer than 6 foot. :D

do you have zipcars or another car-sharing service in the UK? that might be a better idea...just find someone who can drive if you can't, and get all your bulky items/ other stuff not allowed on the bus in one day or over the weekend

I always take a holdall. Decorator's Mate may well give you a bag if you ask for it, but you can see what's in the bag :D
