Jimmy:
...wreckers of law and order. Communists, Maoists, Trotskyists, neo-Trotskyists, crypto-Trotskyists,
union leaders, Communist union leaders, atheists, agnostics, long-haired weirdos, short-haired weirdos, vandals, hooligans, football supporters, namby- pamby probation officers, rapists, papists, papist rapists, foreign surgeons - headshrinkers, who ought to be locked up, Wedgwood Benn, keg bitter, punk rock, glue- sniffers, 'Play For Today', squatters, Clive Jenkins, Roy Jenkins, Up Jenkins, up everybody's, Chinese restaurants - why do you think Windsor Castle is ringed with Chinese restaurants?

Reggie:
You realise the sort of people you're going to attract, don't you Jimmy? Thugs, bully-boys, psychopaths, sacked policemen, security guards, sacked security guards, ratialists, Paki-bashers, queer-bashers, Chink-bashers, anybody- bashers, Rear Admirals, queer Admirals, Vice Admirals, fascists, neo-fascists, crypto-fascists, loyalists, neo-loyalists, crypto-loyalists.
:D one of the greatest comedies of the '70s and one of the bleakest

Jimmy
Really? I thought support would be hard to come across.

(Or something like) :D

Its a terrible idea. Rossiter brought pathos to the role. I can't see Martin Clunes doing that.

Reggie Perrin was so of its time as well, the '70s,cant see how this new series is going to be an improvement.

How many people realise Joan was Audrey from Corrie..? 'Sfunny, when she first started as Gail's mum I couldn't take her seriously, because I kept seeing Reggie's fantasy version of her.

The Fall and Rise of Reginal Perrin was brilliant. One of the best sitcoms ever IMHO.

I think a new one could be done well. The original was very much of its time, but equally some of the themes were pretty timeless so if they update it subtly, and Martin Clunes just doesn't just imitate Leonard Rossiter, it could be interesting. Tbh though I can't imagine enjoying it nearly as much as the original.

I recently downloaded the perrins (for research purposes) and they are good but to be honest they are pretty dated, and while remaking classic comedy might not seem such a great idea, I suspect no-one under 30 will have seen the originals so it will probably work. I also quite like Clunes, he'll probably do a pretty good job, though Stephen Fry would have been the champions choice.

So this new 'Reginald Perrin'?

With Martin Clunes. :hmm:

What do people reckon?

Must admit the original was one of the funniest things the BBC has ever made, subversive for the time too.

So this remake, can it even come close, will it be funny?

Why don't the BBC show the originals again?

The makers say rather than it being a remake of the excellent sitcom, it's another adaptation of the original book. Or something.

So, you know.

mmm didn't Uncle Jimmy shag Reggie's daughter in the book? That would make good tv

I'm conflicted about this.

If they have to do it, there are far worse people than Clunes to play Perrin. He can certainly do the world-weary.

I disagree in principle with all these remakes - they're the curse of the modern world - tv, music, theatre especially. How many new talented new playwrites and scriptmakers have drawers full of brilliant work that will never see the light of day because the producers are all too busy re-doing Reggie or the sodding Sound of Music.
