Nokia N96 announced

Odd you say that, I fucking hated nokia until I got the N95 8GB. It's the most solid phone I've had since the 6210 / SE K750i.

Purely anecdotal - I've had 3 screens bust on my various Nokias (twice with my last one) and the back keeps falling off my latest one. I've had to buy a solid plastic cover just to keep it all in one piece.

My mate acquired (he had to threaten to move carriers and wait a week) a N95 recently - I was quietly impressed, it's a nice phone. But I'm going the iPhone route now it's being released in Holland, I'll have trouble breaking that screen.

I saw a bloke in the Albert with a broken iPhone screen last week. It was still (just about) usable but not worth the £120 to fix it he said.

My nephew managed to break his N95 screen. It's a bit annoying, but the recessed screen of the Centro does a good job of protecting the display.

*ouch* - that must take some doing. My Nokia breaks with about 8 pounds of pressure on the middle of the screen but it's a particularly flimsy phone (the 6280)

Yeah I've read that in a few places but I don't see what's wrong with it tbh....

The N96 is now expected in the UK in September.

It looks a lovely phone to my eyes.

On Monday, T3 got an opportunity to view the Nokia N96 in the wild, which is expected to arrive in September and will be available on the Mix & Match contracts for around £15 per month, with 3 mobile.

The Nokia N96 is one of the most closely watched new releases from the Finnish phone maker as it will be competing closely with Apple's high-profile device. While the N96 has avoided playing copycat with a touch-screen interface, it does pack more than enough tech power to keep pace. Connectivity includes HSDPA and Wi-Fi, and it has 16GB of integrated memory, completely wiping the floor with its 8 gig predecessor, although Nokia later upgraded the N95 to a 16GB option as well.

Where it really beats the iPhone though is the camera - the N96 sports 5-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera with dual LED flash and with instant upload tools for Flickr, Vox, Yahoo! and Google.

It does indeed look very sexeh. Upgrade due in October, think I know what I might be getting. Yes, I am a Nokia fanboy. All but one of my phones has been a Nokia :)

Mmm it looks better than the N95, but there isnt quite enough of a spec leap from N95 to this. I hope the GPS is better than the one on the original N95, which I could rarely get to find satellites. The camera is so great, its the thing all th N95 users I know love, but they dont love the overall experience of using the device unfortunately. Battery life and UI are so important.

One thing I dislike about such phones is the way the network operators have responsibility for releasing new firmware. Being a geek I managed to use the generic Nokia firmware on my N95, so I could move to version 2 of the software which was loads better for battery life, but people at work are still struggling with some v1.xx orange version of firmware. At least Apple got this bit right with the iphone, alerting users to updates and encouraging them to install them.

Its a stupid mistake nokia keep making. What's the point of sticking a decent camera on it when its going to get shoved into pockets.

Does it not bother you? Most cases are crap giving a balance between being able to use the camera and protecting the lens. I can deal with the rest of the phone a bit scratched, but no cap on the lens seems a fairly basic ommision on nokias part, when companies like sony manage it on most models.

Its just dirt, the lens is recessed, with a glass cover which you can clean.

No xenon flash for that, so the camera is more an afterthought tick box than anything you want to use loads. 5mp on such a small sensor is going to be grainy.

Still, even with all those spec's, its a meh from me. Its nice, esp the TV but that requires some legislation to go through parliament for the release of the radio spectrum as I believe its held by the military at the moment. Useless right now.

The 6220 is very similar if you look, with a better camera.

I fail to see how it's a significant improvement on the N95, other than looking a bit nicer.

For me, the one single thing they could do to improve the N95 is sort out the battery life. If I use the camera a lot on mine, it's dead in three or four hours.

The lack of a lens cover would worry me slightly too.

Some people have reported better battery life on the N95 after upgrading the firmware. Not sure if you've done that already.

FWIW, the N96 has a surprisingly low capacity battery, as has been noted earlier. 950mAh, vs. 1250mAh for the N95 8GB, IIRC. Although of course it's possible they are using lower power components, so it may not have a shorter battery life.

It's a loathing of mine too. My GF's 6300 has a vile Orange version of the normally very elegant latest S40 software. I know T-Mobile do this aswell... but I had the impression (based on my 6300) that O2 shipped standard software.

(sorry, sidetracking there from the N96)

I have an n70 and it's brilliant. I won't be changing it till it breaks. Next phone will be android/linux based I reckon, seeing as Symbian appears to be in it's death throes

Yes, I've upgraded the firmware. If there was an improvement it wasn't very significant.

The other thing that would be a useful upgrade would be an improved camera. Not necessarily more megapixels - optical zoom would be very nice.

Hi guys.
Nice forum.
This is my first post here.

Really can't wait for N96! I have read -spam- and become to the decision that will be the best phone all times!
Currently I'm using N95, but anyway I'm going to buy N96 once it will be released!

The thing that annoys me about Nokia (and I've only ever had Nokia phones because the menus and useability is idiot proof, just what I need) is that they don't do dual sim phones.

This is really bloody well annoying, because my home is in one country but I live and work in another, which means I swap out my sim cards when moving from one country to the other and back again. And when I do that it knocks out all the settings for internet stuff, so I have to download and reset things. Not to mention that I don't get calls from the number that isn't in my phone. Grrrr! I wish they'd get with the programme and offer up a dual sim phone.

I guess it relates to ties with contract providers but nowadays so many people go from one country to another and need both phone numbers to work.

Anyone have any contacts in Nokia R&D so I can tell them this?

Fo' real? This is your first post here and you're bigging up Nokia's N96?!?!? Sure you're not some pathetic guerilla marketeer who's paid to big it up? Sad. Very sad. Two words for you: FUCK OFF.

WTF?

Nokia need to make a decent battery, I having a feeling this one is gonna have a battery life just as poor as the N95. Its only slightly more powerful than the last with a load more power hungry chips.

Just to give you an idea my 18-month old htc trinity has a 1500 mAh battery capacity and I only just get two days out of it, and thats using wifi,gps,3g,ect regularly! (I get a lot longer if I don't use any of that, but I didnt get this device to not use things!)
How long do you expect to get out of your battery? You say you get two days using wifi gps etc, to me that sounds quite good. I plug my phone in every night.

My N95 doesn't last anywhere near as long as one day if I'm using it heavily. Particularly if I'm using it for taking photos, in which case it can be dead in a few hours if I'm not careful. If they are going to promote it as being a "multimedia computer" and all the rest of it, then it seems reasonable to expect the battery to be able to cope with all these extra functions being used.

Meanwhile, I notice this has just been announced by Samsung and looks like it will give the N96 a run for its money. I shall be keeping an eye out for reviews, and if its battery life outperforms the Nokia (and the camera is better) then I will be tempted to go for that instead.

This is nice:
Nokia's heavyweight multimedia phone, the N96, is soon to get another killer app: BBC iPlayer. Unlike hacks doing the rounds for some other devices this is down to an official tie-up between the Beeb and Nokia. Some N96 phones will come with the application preloaded, while it can also be downloaded from the BBC site and should - although not confirmed - work on other S60-based phones.

BBC iPlayer offered on Nokia N96
The BBC said the deal with Nokia was essential to reach out to audiences

Users of the Nokia N96 are to be among the first with the ability to run the BBC's iPlayer on their mobile phones.

From 1 October a purpose-built application will be available to download via the BBC website and will also be pre-loaded on some handsets.

BBC

how big is the screen, still don't get watching telly on a small screen (phone)

I'm fairly sure all Nokias are maxed at 320x240. The iPlayer was debuted at 480x320 (iPhone) so this is good news for Nokia owners, but not an advancement for iPlayer. I find video at the double (480) res ok for a bit of bed time watching. I think half that res would be... Half as good?
