Nokia N95 8GB

The lack of a qwerty k/board is a bit of a downer too.
I just can't get on without a proper QWERTY keyboard now. The N95's drove me mad.

I have no trouble at all using the Treo's keypad (in fact, I've written long articles on it), but all that predictive text bollocks just makes it too much of a chore.

I'm on the verge of getting the N95 with 3, looks pretty damn good. Poor battery life sucks but ive read that there are ways of improving it. The lack of a qwerty k/board is a bit of a downer too.

Make sure it's the 8GB! They still sell the original.

I think it's what you're used to.. predictice text is fine for my needs 'cos I never write moe than a couple of sentences on my phone.

Actually, no you can't. That's an update for the 8GB, not the original. They are incompatible according to everything else I've read.

Ha ;)

Don't you Ha me sunshine  :D

I thought you meant the 8gb, which that is the firmware upgrade for.

The original can be upgraded too. Its currently in V.20. I did it yesterday. :p

Would still highly recommend it. Superb phone.

It actually gets supplied with AV leads so you can play Spiderman 3 in HD on your telly.. pretty bling, but kinda pointless.

That's pretty neat. One reason I want a big iPod is to have DVDs ripped to it for use like that (the amount of times I've been at someone's and we wished I had a DVD of mine laying at home...). I liked the phone and a mate was very impressed (he was considering an iPhone until I told a 3G one would be coming later this year :D) too.

I've used this a couple of times to show picture slide shows to people.

Not sure its HD though is it?

So long as you've got decent software on your handset, I think it's well useful being able to output your phone to a TV/projector. I could think of a few talks I've given where the stuff on my phone would have been enough, so I could have kept the lappie at home.

(There used to be an add on for Palm/Pocket PC phones for this but it was pricey)

So if I got an N95, I could download a few movies, put them on the drive, then take the phone to a mate's house or my tv downstairs with the cables and watch them there?

If that's true that's really really cool. I have a metric shitload of films and only a laptop to watch them on

Yep, you could indeed do that. However you'll need the right player installed on the phone. Doesn't support .mpg, .wmv or (divx / xvid) .avi out of the box.

Don't forget your charger - the N95 has a notoriously bad battery life!

Indeed, that could well drain it. Although a plus to it being Nokia is that pretty much everyone has a charger - even the new type.

Battery lasts me two days, but that's with Exhcange mailbox syncing over HDSPA every 15 mins.

Yeah, I got it free with my contract, no way I'm paying £500 :D

No you didn't your just paying for it in installments.

For example on Orange £25 and no phone gets you 800 mins, 100 txts and unlimited calls to landlines.

A similar package with and N95 (not the 8gb) costs £90 and you pay £35 over 18 months, so phone costs £250. Still cheaper if you want the phone, but not free by any means.

I dont get this it takes a 950mha battery, yet I've got 3500 mha aa's rechargables that I use in my headtorch, which cost less then a £10 for 4. Why dont smartphones come with better batteries? I'd rather put up with a little extra bulk and had a phone that took a single aa and I'd be able to carry a couple of spares.

At least my E61 comes with a 1500mha battery giving lots more life then the 750 in my N80, not quite twice as much, but the screen is a lot bigger.

True.. I'm paying £30 a month for 300 minutes/texts. I use about 275 a month, so works perfectly.
