No more Stokefest as Hackney council force 'ridiculous' licensing restrictions

And Tory councils/politicians are any more free festival friendly Zachor? Your belove Boris is heavily responsible for Rise going down the pan, remember.

I'd never defend Hackney Council., who are a notoriously bad one in all sorts of ways and have been complete wankers over this no question, but in reality they're about as 'socialist' as you are, so spin on one with your cheap pointscoring

I remember when they held the 'Essential Festival' on Hackney Marshes, thus barring ordinary locals from using their own bit of local common land.

My brother and I made right idiots of ourselves, ranting at all the security guards about how it was common land.

However, I think the number of other locals doing similarly was why they didn't bother holding that festival there again...

Biggest mistake I could have paid was to get a ticket for that ... rip off city!

Tone set when I found a one-off stall selling excellent farm scrumpy from a big barrel at £2= a pint, well cheaper than the official bars (all of which utterly ripped you off for shite beer). Went back for more cider later on, and 'security' had busted them and ordered the stallholders to remove it, because they were undercutting the official bars (and weren't licenced :p ).

A few good bands, but the whole 'security'-dominated atmosphere was heavy as fuck :(

Rise was being misused by political groups to promote division not to promote togetherness. The prescence of misguided arses like the Cuba Solidarity Campaign didn't do the event any favours. Besides it could be argued that events like Rise only really preach to the converted and don't do jack shit to improve community relations. Essentially they are just a big publicly funded day out for a bunch of middle class lefties. There should be free festivals I agree but they should be commuity organised and run not publicly managed junkets like Rise.

Agree that Crapney are about as socialist as I am. But they're total shitness goes back to the 80's when the borough was red in tooth and claw.

There's probably another Rise thread for this discussion ...

And as I said I'd never defend Hackney, certainly not over this. They're insititutionally corrupt and incompetent, which is only partly to do with their political history. There are other councils elsewhere (of most colours) that other festival organisers can work with reasonably well.

It's total bollocks for Hackney to impose that arbitary limit in numbers, and for them to insist on fencing is ludicrous, far bigger recent free festies have happened with Southwark Council's non-opposition in Burgess Park, with no fencing and few problems. And although Strawberry Fair (also free) is still having ongoing issues with the Police up in Cambridge, the organisers earlier this year managed to resolve their licensing issues with the Council, and there's no fencing there either.

Unskinny Bop at what was once the Pleasure Unit in Bethnal Green (now the Star of Bethnal Green) used to be cool. We went last month and the music was shit, the crowd was so packed in you could barely lift a drink to your mouth, let alone dance, and the noise of all of it was so much that you couldn't talk either.

So you paid (theoretically) to get in and stand in a noisy room, not drinking, dancing or talking to people. Like the tube at rush hour, but with more drunks.

Still, it was good once. :(

It's not age, either - I was already old when I started going there.

Hahahah spot on -- and I thought I was alone..
It's a new style, in this city dancefloor has long lost not only purpose but any sensible meaning at all, and seeing how every shitty basement states its capacity as 350 makes me laugh through the tears of hunger
