No Country For Old Men - Discussion of it's ending, necessarily containing Spoilers..

Did we see them with the bag?
no, because they didn't take it

when Bell returns to the motel room he sees the grill over the air duct has been removed and laying on the floor by the screws is one of Chigurgh's quarters.

Yeah - that's what I thought....the Mexicans tore through the place but didn't find the cash.

Chigurgh knew where to look from events in the previous motel and claimed the money, hence his casual attitude to handing over a large sum of cash to the kid for his shirt....

He had the money, it wasn't important to him in terms of it's value but it's possession represented the completion of his task.

Unless....

The Mexicans had already taken the money and Chigurgh had merely searched for it in the ducts and came away empty handed.

You would have to wonder where the case/money went as he was never seen with it.

Perhaps if he did get the cash, he took some of the money out of it - his "fee" as it were - and left the case in the car after the accident....

Hmmm

I confess that I didn't really hear what the old man was saying - he was mumbling a bit. I drifted off during Bell's final speech too.

Not me, we were talking and didn't realise it was the end. :D We had to rewind it and listen again.

I think the ending just means that things carry on, and there is not always a resolution. The good guy doesn't always get the baddy.

I need observation lessons....

In the book the money isn't even discussed I don't think. I need to go and have another look now and see if any clues are dropped - thing is, the money is not the important thing by that point is it?

I suppse It's not that important in terms of the themes of the piece but nevertheless, it has disappeared.... It's just something we started talking about after seeing the fillum - you never actually saw the case so we don't know who has the money. In fact, I don't think Louellen had the case in his hands when he came out of the brush under the bridge..... I suppose it adds to the ambiguous nature of the ending. Nothing is neatly tied up.

Actually yeah....you don't ever see him claim the money from the bush do you?

Mind you it is weird how Wells knows where he threw it when they are talking in the hospital.

Shit - confused myself now.

Indeed! Although I am prepared to suspend my disbelief a bit on that one and accept that Wells is a smart fucker and probably found it through a process of "what would I do if I was shot up, carrying a heavy bag and crossing the Mexican border...."

He was using the lamp posts as a guide. You could count the numerb from the border gate to where you threw it over the fence and probably be accurate to about 30sqm or so...still a big area, but do-able.

Spot on with the observation with the Chihgurgh and the A/C vent...

How did he know he'd thrown it over the fence though? Just smart?

Who, Llewelyn, Chihgurgh or Woody Harrelson? Sorry, I'm getting confused here...

Wells (Harrelson) - I guess he'd found Llewellyn in the Mexican hospital in the border town and knew that he wouldn't have risked carrying it over, all covered in blood, so Wells figure out he must have dumped it on the approach to the border, as he wouldn't have had time to get a motel room and leave it hidden there

Yes - that's what I thought...

yes you do - he walks out carrying it wearing all his new kit doesn't he? After he's walked into that man's shop in his boots and hospital gown.

Seriously - I didn't see him carrying it. He walked out of the brush and cleaned off his hat. Didn't see the bag though. I remember thinking "where's the bag?"

I didn't see him carrying the bag, but before he dumped it he peeled off a roll of money so he'd have had some, surely, when he ended up in the hospital? enough for the clothes etc.

Anyway, the money isn't relevant really

Is it explicit in the book?

(I realise I could be banging on about a total red herring here!!)
I don't know now - I might have to reread the book (even though I just finished it!).

I don't know - it's whereabouts is still the catalyst for a lot of the events towards the end and I for one am interested to know where it ended up.....

Its whereabouts is unimportant once Llwellyn'd dead and the Mexicans have fled. Chigurh doesn't care about it.
