I saw Nirvana at Reading in 1992 (my friend got a free day pass for the sunday at reading for me and 3 other people). That summer I had been 'getting into' their music all summer. It was my first gig ever. the lineup: Melvins, Pavement, L7, Bjorn Again, Screaming Trees, Mudhoney, Nick Cave, Nirvana. Boy, was that a day and a half.

Ah dodging flying tampons those were indeed the days

it's one of those words that I only ever hear used by music journos . A bit like how football journos are the only people who seem to use the word messers ( whatever it's supposed to mean  )

It's the plural of "Mr", from the French messieurs.

So Mr Iam; Messers Iam and Savage Henry, if one desired formality.

Ummm, carry on. :)

God what a mudbath that was. Trench foot! Public Enemy on the Friday were the highlight for me, though.

i remember watching the Comedy Tent literally blow away. I was tripping hard and it was one of the funniest things i've ever seen

That was also the one when the police horse sank about 4 feet into the mud. One of the best photos I've ever seen!

I also remember that year, because I was sat round a campfire with loads of soaking wet freezing people. It was horrible. So I stood up and said, 'I'm off home to me bed, see ya.'

It can have its benefits living 5 minutes away from a festival site.

But any way, back to the topic. Pixies. By a mile.

The campsite was a hoot. Our wee two-person tent ended up sleeping six on the Sunday night. Luckily we'd pitched it about an inch above the surrounding water level.

Oh, and the Pixies by a mile.

that year i remember me and a mate starting a rumour that Nirvana had been forced to pull out and Carter had taken their place. This was Sunday morning - by Sunday early evening I got told the same story by a journo backstage

SNIGGER :)

I know the Pixies are better and more interesting.

But my vote goes to the Niv for being more "elemental", for want of a less wanky word:)

It's the pop sensibility of the Pixies that I love. Nirvana (for me) totally don't have that.

 But Nirvana were a pop group, far more than the Pixies IMHO. Hence there are 9 year olds at my kid's school with Nirvana hoodies...and Kurt was obviously better pop star material than Frank.:p

I don't think this poll really works, TBH. Although Nirvana's sound clearly was influenced by the Pixies', I think Nirvana's best stuff works on an emotional gut level that the artier Pixies' work just doesn't. I couldn't imagine anyone wanting to regularly revist a "Pixies Unplugged" record, for example.
