Nintendo Revolution official name revealed: Nintendo Wii

Wtf!?

Official site

Nintendo has (as witnessed, for the disbelievers, at revolution.nintendo.com and on the company's Japanese site), rebranded their Revolution "Wii" -- so called, says the announcement, for its simplicity in any language, its "distinctive 'ii' spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play," and the name's ability to set it apart from the crowd.

Along with the name change, Nintendo has also reiterated the capabilities of its hardware, including its self-loading media bay used for new Wii discs, legacy GameCube discs and, with the help of an optional attachment, standard DVD movies and media, plus an SD card port to expand the Wii's internal memory.

Seems so. This made me laugh almost as much as back when I first heard about the Virtual Boy! Nintendo maybe be game creating Gods but in some ways they are reall fucking idiots with no clue! :D

This is so funny - I was sure it must be a spoof but it seems not :D

It's a bit like in the book Gridlock by Ben Eltion when some car company decide to call their new car the 'Crapee'

Nintendo is just saddening. Why can't they fucking stop from embarasing themselves on every generation? "No, cut down the blood on your MK", "Screw CDs, we want carts", "Screw third part support" and now "nintendo wii".

Just brilliant. Stick to making portables/handhelds where you still haven't fucked up in over 20 years.

"Wii will put more people in touch with their games".

This is just a bit too much, Playstation and Xbox console owners will have a field day.

I'm not happy.

Think about it...you're holding onto something long and thing with one hand, then you wave it about a bit and point it at something to direct your Wii.

I could not give a shit what it's called to be honest, i am looking forward to some originality, something that Nintendo have always been good at. If you want the same old games with film like graphics then go for your PS3's and your 360's, i have owned Nintendo consoles from day 1 and loved them all, no doubt i will get one of these and hopefully i will love that too. I certainly will not buy a product because i think the name is naff and i wont worry about what sony and microsoft die hards will say, let them be sheep.... and another thing, it's not about quantity of games, it's about quality, just look at RE 4, look at the screen shots for the new Zelda game on the GC, looks amazing and no doubt it will be, whenever they decide to release it.

I've got a 360 but will be getting a Wii for my fix of originality, just like I did with my Xbox and Gamecube.

'Wii' why?

How the fuck do you pronounce it?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/4953650.stm

Pronounced like... <cough> "we"

Yeah, they really don't have a clue  then again, it's kind of like the same way Microsoft don't have a clue when it comes to penetrating the Japanese market either.

Only Sony seems to excel at marketing in both east and west.

Not that it means their console/games are necessarily the best of course...

has anybody seen video of someone actually playing a game with the motion sensored controller or the thing that looks like an awkard remote control?

The remote control is the motion sensing bit. You use to, eg. move a pointer roudn the screen, hold it sideways and steer a car, hold two of them and box, tilt a Monkeyball level etc. The 'nunchuk' extension also has motion sensing (apparently) and has a joystick + two butons. The implication is that you'll move around with the joystick, and interact with the remote. There's a 'shell' that you will be able to get that slides over the remote and turns it into a gamecube controller, but that's not the standard control.

One of the games sites noticed there isn't a trademark filing for it sparking speculation that this isn't the real name. They think it's just a clever viral campaign to get everyone talking about Nintendo before they reveal the real name at E3...

This is meant to be real, it's the retro controller for the Wii...

E2A: can't seem to verify that it's real, does look cool though...

It is. Looks rubbish, can't see myself holding that thing for more than a few minutes before feeling my fingers dropping.

Satoru Iwata Wants a Starwars game for Wii!

In a recent interview for The Seattle Times Satoru Iwata comments that he really want a star Wars Game for Wii.

this is the question made to Satoru Iwata when he mentioned a Light Saber Game:

Q: Was it hard to add sound to the Wii’s controller? [It has a speaker embedded in it.]

A: Technically speaking, it’s not very difficult. But if you ask me if any company can do it, I think it would be difficult. That’s a very unique advantage Nintendo has. In terms of hardware, we can work very quickly because Nintendo is the hardware manufacturer as well as the software developer and publisher.

In this case, when somebody suggested the idea of putting the speaker into the Wii remote, the trial software was made immediately so we could test what it would sound like.

We really want [filmmaker George] Lucas to think about making a game where this can be used as a light saber. It should be fun.

Calling George Lucas, calling George Lucas! Satoru has a great idea for ya!

:D

The Secrets of Wii - Unlocked!

Wii (still hating that fucking name) remote details:

• The Wiimote will run on 2 AA batteries and will run for 30 hours in normal use. If however, you are playing a game which does not use the direct pointing device, then the remote will last for 60 hours instead. To put this into perspective, the DS Lite last 10 hours on average, and the Xbox 360 with the Lithium Ion battery will give you 25 hours of play.
• The controller and console will communicate via. Bluetooth at a 2.4 GHz Band.
• Inside the controller lies 6KB of non-volatile (remains stored even when turned off) memory which could be for anything from the speaker on the controller to player specific settings – Nintendo has given no details as of yet.
• The Wii and Wiimote both have a Synchro button, beneath the flap on the console and in the battery holder in the remote. Pressing these consecutively connects the controller to system.
• Although obvious, all buttons bar the analog stick on the Wiimote and Nun-Chuk are digital – even the shoulder buttons.
• The sensor bar is 20cm long and must be above or below your TV set.
• The LEDs on the controller not only represent what player you are (out of 4), but will flash a certain number on start-up to represent battery life.
• There is a rumble motor inside the remote that can be turned on or off with no sensitivity given. Nintendo has said to developers that by turning the motor on and off repeatedly, a more shocking rumble is given.
