Nikon D50 Or Canon EOS 350 ??

chriswill

Misbehaving!
I'm off to buy a Digital SLR tomorrow.

I was thinking of getting one of these two.

I think a couple of you have one of either of them (Firky has a D50??).

So which do you think is better or am I missing one that i should be checking out.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

:)

D50! :)

I was in the same situation a few months back, the D50 has features that are slightly more advanced than the D70, but the Canon is also a very good camera.. it's a close call, but I'd say the D50 wins just by inches.

p.s
don't be fooled by the megapix ;)

i'm a bit busy at the moment, but if you want you can email me:

d a l e A T l i q u i d c a t D O T n e t

and i`ll get back to you later :)

Try them - they're essentially the same. Different good points but all technical rather than practical. The 350 is small and harder to work IMO, but lighter.

I like Nikons myself - I have a D70 and it's great. Most people I know with SLRs seem to have Nikons, not Canons. Not much in it though so suck it and see!

Nah megapix aint really an issue, cause I have no intention of blowing them up life size.

And the D50 is quite alot cheaper.

What to do!

Personally I like the look of the nikon better. If I was buying my first SLR I dunno which I would choose - I'd go in the shop and try them both out (not just briefly either, I'd be in there shooting loads and trying out every feature). I'd choose based on ease of operation, ease of handling, weight etc.

Firky, interesting point you make about pro digi SLR's. All the pro's I have seen use Nikons, but the only pro's I've seen in real life are ones that work for small local newspapers. The rich pro's I see on TV that work for big magazines and suchlike, earning shitloads of money are the ones that use canon's :p

what sort of cameras do you have at the moment? If you have canon / nikon film SLRs, stick with the same brand, 'cos your lenses should be interchangeable. If you Use a compact digital camera that is canon / nikon, I'd suggest keeping brand loyal, as controls are likely to be familar.

Otherwise Buy the cheapest deal, you can get. You aren't going to be able to tell the difference in quality

I have a Nikon at the mo'

All the signs are pointing towards the D50.

Cheers for the links Firky, You are swaying me towards the Nikon

Cos canon make 'big fuck off tear you a new one' flourite lenses - I reckon.

When I've been to St. James (Newcastle's football ground hehe), all the photpgrapher's there use canons and shoot in film, sometimes they use silly cameras that I can't even bring myself to type, because they make me weep with envy :(

I shopped around for my camera, at Jessops, Northern Cameras, London Camera Shop and a few independant places - I asked them all the same question - "350 or D50?" and they all said D50!

Couple of pics for you, all taken with a kit lens:

I asked in jessops today and he pushed the 350 although I got the distinct impression he was trying to flog me the more expensive of the two.

Cool pics firky, cheers

Girl in Jessops said she bought the D70 and would of bought the D50 if it was out when she was after! Oh well :)

Guy in the London shop didn't even bother getting the Canon for me to play with, but quite happily let me take the D50 out for an hour.

The lad in PC World looked at me blankly :D

I can pick up the D50 with a 256mb SD card, Lens kit and Cheap carry bag for £494.....

Not that I'll tell the wife how much it costs.
;)

There was a bloke in work(selfridges) that was suggesting a sony one, but by his own admission it wasnt his area of expertise.

Where you buying from?

I have taken the plunge and got the D50.

First impression is of all round quality, Nicely weighted and reassuringly expensive.

My first pic with it, sorry about the subject matter.

(its huge by the way, and I had to scale it down 'cause it was too big for imageshack)

Cheers
Again

I'm gonna have fun.

Nice - was just wondering where you bought it from?

it was going to be one of two things, a cat, yourself topless or the sprog :)

Ha not topless now

The pic which you are referring to was taken about 3 years ago.

I have gained many quit smoking pounds since then, and will spare other posters the horror of my torso now.
