Nikon D3/D300 news

I've just got myself on the preorder list for a D300 at Grays Of Westminster - they reckon it could be Feb before I get one though  :(

I've sold quite a few pics recently so that's giving me the excuse to indulge myself in a new camera. So tell me about the D300. The high ISO stuff looks great.

Anyone used one? How much bigger than the D80 is it? What's the weatherproofing like (that's a bit of an issue for me). Is it really worth the upgrade?

I'll let you know as soon as mine arrives!
I'm *very* tempted.

Shame it hasn't got image stabilisation though but that 6400 ISO looks sweet. And live view! ;)

I hate to say this, but they have them in Jessops at the mo. At least there's been one in Weymouth Jessops for a while now.

Edit: looking at the Jessops website, quite few of their stores have them.

Hmm, must ring Grays then when I've got a moment!

Live view is something I'll never use, and IS is built into the 18-200 lens I've ordered with it :p

I've just unexpectedly sold a load of pictures today.
Maybe the Big Man Upstairs is trying to tell me to go forth and D300-ify?!

I don't think there's anyway you'll regret getting one.

It will feel a fair bit bigger & chunkier than what your used to but you'll aclimatise quickly enough.
Weather proof wise, They're pretty good apparently, I've used a rented D200 a fair bit on location including a couple of drizzly days and it's fine - it's wasn't a concern that crossed my mind.

Is it worth the upgrade? if you've got the dosh, I'd say100%.

(I've got one on loan for a w/end from my rental place in a couple of weeks so I'll have a good fiddle then, but having been more than happy with the D200, I'm pretty sold already)

I had a play with a D300 yesterday. Fuck. How good is the high ISO performance?!!

It's an awesome camera - sadly it's out of stock in NYC, so I'll have to start saving my pennies to see if I can get it next year at the UK's inflated prices.

This is hardly cutting edge news, as I read it in, erm, Amateur Photographer today in Borders, but according to their review the D3 seems to be remarkable.

If you have 3 grand and can carry around something the size of your own head, it probably is quite useful.

I received an email a couple of days ago saying that some internet firm - Microglobe - has them in stock.

...........

So, it's my very last day in New York - long, long after I'd give up trying to find a D300 anywhere within reach of the city (I'd scoured the web and been up to the technology wonderland that is B&H) - and I'm walking up 5th Avenue and decide to pop into a 'Tottenham Court Rd-style' photo shop called Willoughbys for a lens cap (really!).

I see a display model of the D300 and ask if they have any in stock, expecting the usual "they're on back order" reply.

But the owner says, "Sure - we got 'em in stock for $1,799 - and how would you fancy getting the Nikkor image stabilised 18-200mm zoom, with UV filter bundled in - with the whole package costing you $2,675?" (that's around £1,350).

Just how quick do you think my credit card came out?!!!

:)

Canny christmas present!

I Expect a review as soon as you get back :D
I'm back now. I'm too done in to start playing with it, but I just took a handheld night picture of the street opposite and the quality is astonishing.

It's an almighty leap up from the D80.

The ISO on the sample pics I saw from Nikon had my jaw on the floor.
It's outrageously good. From my (admittedly brief) play with the D300 in the shop, the ISO 3200 pics looked more like ISP 640 on my D80.

Glad you got one
It's an awsome bit of kit. I had a demo of the D300 & D3 yesterday from my rental guys.
Fucking enjoy.

Cheers. The shop details you gave me were out of stock (thanks again, btw), and the 5th Ave store matched them for price, so I was well chuffed.

Here's a few snapshots taken on the D300/18-200mm.
It's a really fanstic camera and a big step up from the D80.

did you mean from the D200 ? as the D80 has not been replaced...
No. I meant that the D300 is a massive step up for me - I had a D80 before.

Actually, I've still got the D80, so I need to get the thing flogged off pronto!
