Nights at the Circus - at the Lyric

Really enjoyed it, and the lyric such a nice theatre - all proper red and gold and curly... :) [goes off to see what else Kneehigh are up to this year....]

wish i'd gone now. I'm very theatrephobic, but if there's sufficient invention (see: Shockheaded Peter) and a healthy lack of 'acting' (ie shouting) i'm up for it. Sounded great

It was wonderful - I was all tearful at the end when lovely Jack and gorgeous Fevvers got together and had that dance in the sky.

What was that Nina Simone song?

Such a talented cast as well - singing, acting, circus skills, singing and acting while doing circus skills, playing instruments, comedic acting, tragic acting....Biffo/Buffo (?) made my blood run cold.

And the 4/5 players in the "chorus" were fantastic. So tight in all their scenes.

It was excellent :)

Edit: and I saw a hurdy-gurdy played for the first time!

You should have.

It was breathtaking stuff and the cast were exceptionally talented. The one woman (who bore a worrying similarity to Charles Hawtrey!) had a voice so pure and beautiful she gave me goose bumps.

The musicianship, choreography and singing was immaculate throughout (and I normally hate anything remotely approaching a 'musical') and the lead female certainly didn't hurt the eyes either :)

oh god i'm so jealous! i bet i would've been tearful too. Nights At The Circus is one of my favourite Angela Carter novels (have you read Wise Children too?)

PieEye - don't s'pose you picked up a programme did you? if so can you see if there are any contact details for the people who put it on please - then pm me if yes. i can email/ring 'em to see if they'll be doing it again somewhere near me.

dead chuffed you all had a fabulous night with Fevvers

dead jealous too! :D

None I'm afraid - company was called Kneehigh and they did it in conjunction with the Bristol Old Vic and Lyric Hammersmith, I expect those two venues could help you out.

In the end it was excellent but it took me a while to be convinced..

Having seen this style of theatre done superbly by the Right Size, Peepolykus, Theatre de Complicite and even at Mark Rylance's Globe, I was waiting for more clever gimmickry with the set, props and costumes and a lot more comedy.. but nothing can be completely original and that didn't matter in the end because it did have a hell of a lot of good bits (esp the tigers  ) and the acting was superb.

The adaptation was genuinely inventive approach to what is a very challenging story to tell, the approach they took and the changes they made to get it to the stage worked very well.

Good show! :)

As I said earlier in the tread I've seen just about every show Kneehigh Theatre have done for the last decade or so :) I sometime do volunteer stewarding for them. Usually I prefer their small shows that tour South West village halls, arts centres etc. The constraints of the venues makes them more inventive, or something, (I could never be an art critic, but I knows what I like ;) ). They've also done some magnificent outside promenade productions  Nights at the Circus tour dates

Damn, their only US venue is in South Carolina.

Why bother with America when you can play Kehelland Village Hall?

Well, book my theater company at Kehelland Village Hall and you may be onto something!

:D

So glad to read good reviews of this - I've booked tickets for me n'fuct for when it comes to Plymouth - stalls, 3rd row back, right in the centre :) I've been raving about Angela Carter to him for a while now and he's halfway through Wise Children and thinks she's great - clearly, a man of good taste :D
