Time of no Reply, River Man, Cello Song, awesome songs.

His tunings were wierd too, the D string was tuned lower than the A string sometimes.

I still listen to the album Pink Moon, fabulous.

I voted for both.

:p

I have always remained resolutely uninspired by his work, though this has surprised me, given that I think this is something I should like when you take into account my other tastes.....

Not crap - just "meh"

I've voted not crap because I think to call him crap would be too harsh .... however there are a shed load of singer song writers of his ilk/era that wipe the floor with him .... not least of all John Martyn !

I've tried.

I really have.

Friends have even bought me Nick Drake CDs.

But... I just can't stand it. Dull, dull, dull, dull, mumbling boredom.

So I'm voting crap, because I'd rather let Ninjaboy perform ear surgery on me than have to listen to any more.

Come on you Drake-hayterz, jesus, I post on the Sandi Thom - Crap/Not Crap? thread and step back to look at the forum afterwards and this is the first thread I see...the complete opposite of all she stands for, manufactured shite and here's a guy who's releases got nowhere whilst he was alive, got depressed, most likely topped himself (always a good career move in the music biz) to be discovered (and yes, marketed as well) by a later generation.
But again, the proof is in the pudding. I got introduced to Nick Drake about 5 years ago, drunkenly stumbling back to some aussie mate's pad, they slung on Pink Moon, I was bewitched. Then went and bought all three of his lps that were re-issued on 180g virgin vinyl pressings on Simply Vinyl...

Yes, you may have to be "in the mood" but I have enough dark moments to identify with beauty and despair that seem to co-exist in Pink Moon.

OR...how about offering it on the Urban75 recycle forum...
I'm sure it will be err, snapped up by the hordes of rabid Drake fans that haven't yet slit their wrists... :p

all of the criticisms are sort of valid

i think it's strange that nick drake is the sort of thing thirtysomething management consultants relax to after lemonjelly and zero7 get too hardcore

pink moon especially is so introverted and quiescent and bleak

not crap. influential, interesting, introspective. Has boring moments but so does everyone. Wasn't really around long enough to get crap, also inspired another great, John Martyn, to write Solid Air.

h's absolutely great. it's the sort of music that you have to feel empathy with the bloke, or at least his sentiments, to enjoy

you can't stick it on and go "that's phat"

not all music is produced to be sold you know

kill the haters

Strange face, with your eyes
So pale and sincere.
Underneath you know well
You have nothing to fear.
For the dreams that came to you when so young
Told of a life
Where spring is sprung.

You would seem so frail
In the cold of the night
When the armies of emotion
Go out to fight.
But while the earth sinks to its grave
You sail to the sky
On the crest of a wave.

So forget this cruel world
Where I belong
I'll just sit and wait
And sing my song.
And if one day you should see me in the crowd
Lend a hand and lift me
To your place in the cloud.

saving my life right about now he is.

It wasn't suicide, it was a cry for help - and he wrote the song Black Dog about his manic depression....sad really, I think the guy was a genius :(

I love Nick Drake.

Pink Moon, especially, is just brilliant. I've listened to it a lot in some fairly difficult times, and I've got a lot of affection for it. It's like an old friend. :)

He is a great songwriter, and he has a really haunting soft voice.
Just listened to 'One of These Things' played at a funeral for a friend who killed himself. He liked Nick Drake. I don't think I'm ever going to be able to listen to it again without sobbing uncontrollably.

You can say the sun is shining if you really want to
I can see the moon and it seems so clear
You can take a road that takes you to the stars
I can take a road that'll see me through

Kind of makes every other lyric ever written by anybody sound like utter wank.

 i was rather of the opinion that the lyric you've quoted is utter wank. With a garnish of mimsy shite. It just doesn't say anything, a bunch of blathersome platitudes.

I *heart* the word mimsy :D

I thought I was gonna be the only one here who didn't like Nick Drake. :D

Soppy, mumbly, boring toss.
