Ah damn, that's day before my first exam! :(

edit: don't suppose the documentary is the one on bbc a few weeks back. I downloaded it off uknova a while ago.

Five leaves left is excellent but as a whole I see Pink Moon as the more impressive work.

Pink Moon is a brilliant album, isn't it. :)

What I don't get is why Bryter Layter seems to be the most popular Nick Drake album. It's good, but to me it feels a bit overproduced and twee: Five Leaves Left is much nicer IMO.

Five Leaves Left is the first Nick Drake album I heard, which would probably explain why I love it so much. I have a tendency to fall in love with the first album I hear of a great artist. I heard River Man on some compilation CD, and listened to Five Leaves Left at the first opportunity I had.

Did anyone see that documentary on him: Nick Drake, A Skin Too Few? It was on uknova a while back. I think I've got it kicking about on my hard drive still.

One of the few artists it is hard to say of that they are over rated in any way. His output was very consistent and its worth getting all the original albums. Can't say that the vinyl sounds better than the CDs though.

Johm Martyn's Solid Air is about Nick Drake and that is also a superb album.

Sometimes, when Wolfie is listening to music and I'm not really paying attention, I find myself thinking, "who's this weary git?". So I ask him and he says "Nick Drake"

I'll get my coat.

Humph - you beat me to it - was just going to mention John Martyn - who anybody who likes Nick Drake should listen to. And pssst - if you like those guys, you'll like my mate rob who's playing offline this thursday (plug plug plug :))

'Solid Air' has to be one of my all time favourites (& would def feature on my 'Desert Island Discs' selection) despite the amount I've played it since only relatively recently discovering it. Amazing how relevant/moving a classic album can be, even if it takes you 30 years from it's release to discover it. More please……

I've been intending to get some Nick Drake for ages....
what's the consensus regards his definitive album? Should I start at the beginning with 'Five Leaves Left'?

hell, there's only three! tho you should get the version of pink moon with the extra four tracks from the very last recording, which make pink moon sound comparatively bright and breezy.

none of the other 're-discovered' tracks are really worth the bother i don't think. they're okay, but nothing special.

Good idea but if you want to a reasonable sample of his career there is an Introduction to Nick Drake called Way to Blue.

There was a documentary about john martyn on last year, it was sad to see that a musician capable of producing some defining moments in this area of music is now a rambling pisshead. He has had his foot amputated and moved to Ireland.

Downloaded Drake's albums a while back and I find that they make me want to listen to Bert Jansch instead. Jansch was obviously a huge influence on Drake (and John Renbourn) but I find it hard to ignore when listening to Drake.

I've only heard a tiny bit of John Martyn. Glory box is a bit of a stunner.

*notes down to find some Bert Jansch*

Tbh I like Pink Moon as it is, but then I've got a bit of an aversion to extra tracks tacked onto the end of albums anyway.

There's a compilation of various bits and pieces, including one or two home-tapings of early songs (including a lovely bluesy track called 'Been Smokin' Too Long') and the four extra tracks. It's not that difficult to get hold of, and it's well worth a listen. Now, if only I could remember the title...

i think he was very talented and his early passing was sad - and i would probably overidentify with him were it not for a slight aversion to english folk idioms

what do you think :)

only got introduced to him last year, but what a guitarist

think he's brillaint. Soft voice and mellow tunes.

just never got it. soporofic, mimsy, both joyless but lacking any kind of emotional depth i could get hold of. reedy, thin gruel of a sound.
ugh

Time has told me is a goodun'
Of course it doesn't have the emotional depth of an act such as...say, Chumbawumba...
But I think it holds its own all the same:p

p.s. IMO suicide as an act requires some emotional depth.

Infact, while I'm at it, the combination of his strong and unique fingerpicking style, countered with a haunting and gentle voice made for quite a full sound.

Never appealed to me but then not really my sort of music - think he may have become a bit of a cult because he is no longer alive. Having said that, I haven't listened to any of his work for years so maybe I would appreciate it more now

Hugely influential, beautifully played tunes. Sad that people like him only get the recognition they deserve after they die. That said, in his case if he'd got it in his lifetime, it would probably have brought his life to an end even earlier.

Five Leaves Left is the only stuff I have heard but it is good. Will get round to the other too soon no doubt
