Newts

Termite Man

zombie flesh eater
Me and shells have just inherited a newt called Stavros , and he is probably the coolest pet ever , he doesn't do much but then he goes fucking mental and flings himself out of the water for a bit before going back to lounging behing a rock ! He also eats the best food in the world too , so far I've only fed him frozen bloodworms but hopefully soon I'll be able to give him some live ones

And since the guinea pigs get a thread I thought it would be rude not to give Stavros a thread .

I must try to find a picture of Hank (RIP) the nicest pet I ever had. He liked meal worms.

They're pretty easy to keep happy. Your set-up looks good in the pics. Don't let the water temperature vary too much (so don't situate near a radiator or very sunny window). Don't be tempted to use food from the garden unless you're absolutely certain it hasn't been near pesticides. Don't feed too much - feeding too little is less harmful. If you feed with crickets, don't leave them within reach of drunk people :D

They eat crickets  how does that work ?

Stavros is about 4" in length (including tail ) and from websites we've looked at small newts need more land than water and the bigger ones need more water than land ! At the moment Stavros has more water than land ( and he only ever sits on his filter anyway  ) . We're just worried we've got the water/land ratio wrong !

My memory is a little rusty but that newt looks an aweful lot like a great crested newt to me. The Great crested newt is a protected species under UK law and it is an offence to keep it as a pet.

The Great crested newt is protected because it is an endangered species and Britain is probably its last stronghold in the whole of Europe even here its population has been in decline since the 40's

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_crested_newt

"t is a protected species under schedule 5 of the UK's Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981and is therefore subject to the provisions of Section 9, which make it an offence to:

• Intentionally kill, injure or take a great crested newt [Section 9(1)]

• Possess or control any live or dead specimen or anything derived from a great crested newt [Section 9(2)]

• Intentionally or recklessly damage, destroy or obstruct access to any structure or place used for shelter or protection by a great crested newt [Section 9(4)(a)]

• Intentionally or recklessly disturb a great crested newt while it is occupying a structure or place which it uses for that purpose [Section 9(4)(b)]

Regulation 39 of the Conservation (Natural Habitats &c.) Regulations 1994 (the Habitats Regulations)makes it an offence to:

• Deliberately capture or kill a great crested newt [Regulation 39(1)(a)]

• Deliberately disturb a great crested newt [Regulation 39(1)(b)]

• Deliberately take or destroy the eggs of a great crested newt [Regulation 39(1)(c)]

• Damage or destroy a breeding site or resting place of a great crested newt [Regulation 39(1)(d)]"

Looks like a fire belly to me, which are OK to keep.

SH - you can feed a newt with small crickets, providing it with sport at the same time :D

I reckon he is a fire belly , I've just had a look at some other pictures . From what I've read it seems like we've got the set up fairly accurate , although stavros seems to like basking on his filter more than on the land we've made for him
