News Just In: Dub's Cup In 'Runneth Over' Shocker..

acid priest:

you're wrong. this is fact.

to claim that mercury rev even have the right to be mentioned in the same sentence as the flaming lips is a heresy that once upon a time would ahve seen you burnt at the stake.

shut it, basically!

too true. Mercury Rev are merely OK, and a shadow of their former selves before Jonathan Donahue's campy stagey whining dominated.

Funny that, because Jonathan Donahue was once in the Flaming Lips himself - so I would have thought that it's par for the course that they get mentioned in the same sentence.

Mercury Rev move me whereas, despite endless attempts to rectify the situation, these days I find Flaming Lips endlessly overrated. Don't get me wrong, I love much of their earlier stuff and think 'Zaireeka' was a work of genius - but I haven't been bowled over by 'The Soft Bulletin' or 'Yoshimi...', whereas 'Deserter's Songs' and 'All Is Dream' were amazing records. And I get a bit fucking sick of constantly reading about how untouchably brilliant they are in the press.

It's simply my opinion that Mercury Rev are better than Flaming Lips - or am I not entitled to an opinion? Or are you on a one-man mission at the moment to completely rubbish my musical tastes or something?

Nah, they're 'okay' records. Yerself Is Steam is an amazing record :)
All Is Dream especially is just a bit too quavery voiced, Wizard of Oz Tim Burton wank for me :)

sorry dude, no offence intended. i do that to everyone.

obviously you are entitled to your opinion, but as far as i'm concerned part of the fun of being a music geek is acting like one's own musical tastes are the ONLY viable tastes in the world.

but i still think the lips are better. mercury rev have never felt anything more than dull to me.

Have to say, I'm with Dub and others on the 'object' thing - a harddrive buried in a PC or a load of crystal cases with untold numbers of MP3 files on them isn't the same as a CD collection of individual artist albums that you've bought - it's all about assigned value (and something to do with paying the artists you like for making your life more bearable but we'll leave that particular discussion shall we?). BUt that's boring.

No worries man, I get ya. ;)

Surely though there's a case when for example comparing the profoundly cavernous eternity of 'Holes' or the emotional burnout gothic soul of 'Goddess On A Hiway' to the rather business-as-usual (maybe it's due to comparing it with the brilliance of their earlier stuff) 'Race For The Prize' or 'Waitin' For Superman'? Perhaps I'm coming down on FL a bit hard - they're still a band I like and I always get the new stuff - but I'm just a touch underwhelmed by their more recent material. :(

Or a few shelves of dusty, yellowing records with dry brown selotape peeling off the edges...mmmmmmmyeah! ;) :D

are you going to turn into one of those whining little fucks who follows me around the boards having a pop, you sorry sack of shit?

and your post makes no sense - i jokingly accused Bluestreak of being a bully, but not a po-faced cunt (that was, as i'm surprised you don't recall, you i referred to). so if you're going to play stalky-games, try and at least engage your brain.

thanks :)

who are the Nextmen ? I keep seeing their name around and see they remixed the current Fat Freddy's Drop single. What sort of stuff do they play ? (Man...)

they're a very witty and inventive Brummie (i think) hip hop duo, who's own stuff is almost as good as the excellent mixes they keep knocking out. like a lot of the best Brit hip hop, they pull a lot of styles to make their tunes, and reggae is a big factor which is why i like them :)

I'm still waiting for news of when 'Fall Heads Roll' is coming out. I thought it was originally going to be August...?

I don't know if I can bear to download it before it comes out though...like you said yourself, it's all about the Benjamin wotsisname syndrome...or something... :D

ah, i download and buy if i like it.. i don't listen to much (music) radio so i reckon it's fair enough to test stuff

lovely larry got called a po-faced cunt by me on another thread, and he's keen to 'keep up the pressure' on me, apparently by posting really random and illogical shit all over, including on my birthday thread (although he was spineless enough to edit that :) )

don't worry about it, bluestreak, he's a tiresome irrelevance. :)

You can have a lend of my Nextmen "Blunted in the Backroom" if you want? I'm hearting that "Blood and Fire" tune with MC Dynamite

Nextmen Mix Tape (cd really) then?

*pedant cap on* and the Nextmen are posh, well very nicely spoken boys from Cambridge, btw...well most people sound nicely spoken compared to me, innit!

I only edited on the advice of somebody whose opinion I value--not you, evidently. As for irrelevance--well, I'll leave that for others to judge on that matter in our respective cases.

but you do concede that your post on this thread was pretty illogical? it just bears no relation to what i said or who i was saying it to. if you're going to be a petty little twat, try and pepper your sniping with some semblance of a clue :)

bless
