Funny that, because Jonathan Donahue was once in the Flaming Lips himself - so I would have thought that it's par for the course that they get mentioned in the same sentence.bluestreak said:

Don't get me wrong, I love much of their earlier stuff and think 'Zaireeka' was a work of genius - but I haven't been bowled over by 'The Soft Bulletin' or 'Yoshimi...', whereas 'Deserter's Songs' and 'All Is Dream' were amazing records. And I get a bit fucking sick of constantly reading about how untouchably brilliant they are in the press.
It's simply my opinion that Mercury Rev are better than Flaming Lips - or am I not entitled to an opinion? Or are you on a one-man mission at the moment to completely rubbish my musical tastes or something?

Have to say, I'm with Dub and others on the 'object' thing - a harddrive buried in a PC or a load of crystal cases with untold numbers of MP3 files on them isn't the same as a CD collection of individual artist albums that you've bought - it's all about assigned value (and something to do with paying the artists you like for making your life more bearable but we'll leave that particular discussion shall we?). BUt that's boring.
