There's some great fire escapes in there, nice shadows

Why don't we get them in London? Anyone know?

Strongly disagree here. I find selective b+w/colour looks very tacky, additionally I think his pink suit stands out enough that it doesn't need the gimmick (also a danger that it would look like I added the pink).

Probably speaking Russian! I found the whole area of Brighton Beach (Little Russia) remarkable, really felt like I'd walked into a different country.

It was a very quick shot as she walked past me so exact composition wasn't an option. I definitely want to practice more street photography, it's not as hard as I thought it would be. To quote from a Nike ad, the secret is to "just do it".

I wondered the same -- the best answer I got is that NY had specific building regulations for a number of years requiring the fire escapes. Perhaps they're not as essential since we don't often hear of anyone dying in a fire because of a lack of escape route?

That sort of thing is for Athena poster kitten shots...

Maybe it's the secret to selling more photos! Although you don't see Athena shops around any more...

Thanks, Paul. The second one you've linked to I think is particularly similar to your style.

These two stood out going through them the first time.

although there's some other good ones, of course.

Nice one.

That first one is very Paul Russell.

My faves (and I'm going to go back to telling you about how you do portraits well) are:

We generally have similar tastes in fire escapes it seems. :D

I'll mail you properly over the weekend. Show closing tommorrow so get some time back to myself now.

I like the fire escape ones, I get much more of a 'feel' for NYC through them than I do of the photographs of people but I think the vernacular buildings and how they're used is more telling than any of its people. The shots that stand out the most for me aside the people shots are:

Wonder wheel
Underpass
Main in Pink

I also really like the one of the old man on the subway but it bugs me that you can't see his left eye. I'd of been tempted to frame it so it looked like he was caged. The well dressed couple would have worked better with a tighter frame as well imo. Still not a bad series of shots. I think if I was you I would have been tempted to focus more on the vernacular but often those shots end up very stale. Although Pie 1 did an excellent shot of a NYC car park, that I have print of on my wall!

They're a little social oasis of their own fire escapes. It is where smokers huddle, kids drink and tramps piss. If fire escapes could talk...

Yeah, it works as it is methinks. Selective colour can look ace if its not applied in a cliched way - yellow on B&W = win!

Yer I suppose it could be seen as cheesy or cliched it reminds me of the bit in Matrix where they go on about the girl in the red dress

Robster and I share quite similar tastes, those are pretty much my own favourites. Funnily enough, the pink fire escape is actually one of Skim's. I'd assumed it was my own until she corrected me, I've now added the credit.

I took a lot of shots on the subway but the man behind the bars is the only one that works. It's already a major crop, I'm attaching a full version below. While I agree that ideally both his eyes should be visible, I'm less bothered about these kinds of details than I used to be. With candid street photography I think a bit of rough/imbalance is fine -- just doesn't feel right to try too hard for studio/posed type perfection.

Surprised you like the wheel, Firky. I almost didn't include it because it didn't feel too original. Always interesting getting others' points of view.

People vs. objects/shadows/textures is almost impossible to debate, sort of apples vs. oranges, just totally different. Often I find buildings and details make for more aesthetically pleasing photos, but they feel rather cold, easy and unoriginal. Whereas people, especially candid street photography, feels challenging, ephemeral and rewarding.

I agree with that.
