t.A.T.u.: "All About Us"
genre: pop

The party line on t.A.T.u. is that laissez-faire capitalism begets sinister svengalis, who beget crypto-lesbian bobbysoxer chipmunks, at which point morality promptly ends. Lost in this neat construct is the part where the chipmunks sing perfect pop songs. t.A.T.u. have a particularly ruthless trick up their sleeve-- they follow a great chorus with a crushing post-chorus stretch-- and "All About Us" has an even better one than the unhinged "this is not enough" section from "All the Things She Said". This time, after a typically martial declaration of their whatever, the girls blow right past the chorus and redo the money line over a plaintive break of bells and timpani: a brilliant switcheroo. It's also, interestingly, t.A.T.u.'s most Slavic musical moment to date, which may mean their camp has relaxed a bit about taking over the West. Good thing, as a bit of obscurity becomes these two.

Some (and by some I mean you) will be saddened to know that the attendant video forgoes tonsil hockey for an ode to friendship. And gun ownership. And brain splatter. Look it up-- it ain't getting on MTV. [Michael Idov]

ffs I managed about 5 seconds of that tripe before closing the bloody browser page or I would have chucked the monitor through the window!

The original name comes from a collocation of "ta" and "tu" [pronounced 'too'], two forms of a Russian feminine demonstrative pronoun "ta" in its nominative and accusative cases. It can be translated as "This female [does something to] that female." The West was told that it meant "This girl loves that girl", but actually in Russian the name was taken to imply "This girl fucks that girl".

Tatu was also the codename Che Guevara of Cuban revolutionary fame used. Plus - it's another name for "armadillo."

Poptastic but the video is dark...

(The link above didn't work for me at first, which is how I discovered that it's censored and this WMV isn't.)

And anyone who really only listened to 5 seconds only got the post-ironic bit when they're listening to their own track in the car :D

It's like watching Mike Tyson's sorry decline. Not Gonna Get Us was a marvellous, magical pop tune like many from 200km/h in the Wrong Lane, but this is just bollocks.

"Not Gonna Get Us" was absolute shite, certainly when compared to "Everything She Said", but when all's said and done, apart from the mastery of Trevor Horn's production and the intrinsic fascination one enjoys watching two pretty girls kissing passionately, TaTu don't have much to offer me... but hey, I'll check the video out and report back in a few minutes...

:)

Hmm.

The tune itself is quite compelling, like much of their stuff, it has that Euro-disturbed feel, though the double-delay effect on the vocal started to piss me off after a while, it's still an impassioned and unique piece of work.

I say unique because I am a huge fan of Trevor Horn's work, and there are clear remnants here of in my opinion his best project - that's the sublime German band Propaganda, when Claudia Brucken sang lead with them - ironically this sounds more like the track "Your Wildlife" from their LP "1234" which notably replaced the awesome Brucken with the softer (and duller) tones of Betsi Miller... in fact it's fairly difficult to tell Betsi Miller's high notes apart from those of the undeniably sexy little minx, grrr, Julia Volkova (the dark haired goth one).

The thing is - Trevor Horn didn't produce it, which makes it even more odd.

And odder still - the string sections are arranged by Richard Carpenter, yes, that Carpenter who had to watch his sister starve herself to death.

And it doesn't get odder than this - they've managed to get Sting on bass, certainly for a few of the album tracks, anyway.

In summary, the TaTu project was always going to be "interesting" even if that meant measuring the reactions of a shocked public.

But it seems once you get past the incessant girly snogs and knee-high socks, they do have some kind of a mission, musically speaking.

And naturally, I approve wholeheartedly of rapists being shot point blank in the head, which is what appears to be happening on a crappy stuttered Windows Media File version of this video (Bill Gates is a useless codec-hogging fool when it comes to innovation in video file technology).

It'll sound good coming out of the radio - certainly better than Whores Aloud ever will - and I'll always be the first to support pop music that comes from a Nordic or Slavic origin, it's far more seductive and compelling, and that's even before they're fondling each other for the cameras.

TaTu? I approve of it, though I wonder what kind of relationship the two young ladies actually have given the pressures of a publically staged confrontational sexual attitude coupled with a doubtlessly Russian criminal financial backing.

Go for it girls, you can laugh about it all in a decade or so.

Well, if I'm judging as to how it's intended.. the dark one has matured in a very pleasing manner, good use of arse, leg, and knee high boots.. but bless the ginger one, they've put her in a suit with only a bit of cleavage to show off.. bit hidden away isn't she?

Think the dark one probably enters my top ten women list.

Apologies for the slightly sexist nature of this post.

I don't know, maybe ask your mother?

I've never discussed masturbation with my mother ever. Her and my dad did give me a Clare Rayner sex education pamphlet when I was 13 though. They took the girl's bit out though, which, on reflection, probably delayed the start of my own wanking career.

Am I missing something? Have you timed my mum having a wank? Hence the ' '

How long did she take?
