New Sony MP3 walkman -- ugly or what?

I wouldn't really buy an mp3 player on its looks, but I reckon the iaudio X5 looks pretty smart, got some good reviews as well. Bit expensive at the moment though.

Yeah, I like that.

But the price!!

yeah its a bit pricey at the moment, although that link is for the 60gig one, the 30 and 20 ones are bit cheaper.

£309 for a 60 gig is only a few quid more than the 60 gig iPod. Nice looking player that...

I've got a 1GB creative nano. Apart from being terrifyingly tiny - like paying 80 quid for a BIC lighter, the sound quality is excellent - pity they couldn't have had a nice extruded ally case made for it ...

Actually a colleague has one of those Sony bean things and I have to say that although way too annoying not to be able to simply drag and drop, the ATRAC format - superficially at least - seemed to give better sound quality for a given bitrate ...
It does compared to MP3, but not more sophisticated codecs.

Agree, use mp3 in my NW5 generally but did mess around with ATRAC which was better to my ears anyway. But couldn't be arsed to convert 40+ gig of mp3's.

If sony made atrac non proprietry and incorporated drag & drop functionality into SonicWare (which is a seriously bad piece of software) then they'd be more than a match for Apple.

actually the mini-disc uses atrac by default but you can use mp3 if you avoid sonic stage. use realplayer drag and drop mp3s onto your md player with realplayer.
