New Sony MP3 walkman -- ugly or what?

Now, the bean thing to me is far better looking than the shiny bug in my OP.

No idea what the other differences are, like. :o :p

A lighter with MP3 player capabilities?

Fuck me, if Sony (or, indeed Zippo) made one of those, I'd buy it!

A combined memory stick, lighter & MP3 player. My dream gadget. :)

Definately a nicer looking player than the ipod. The ipod is just too boxy bulky peice of shit, to be honest.

Sony make some nice looking kit but the software they come out with is bloody awful.

This is what one of the reviews I posted on page one says. Bit of a worry for me cos I was going to get this. It suggests waiting a couple of months for them to iron out the clitches. I am rubbish with technology so this is important for me.

Ain't it the truth.

Sticking to stuff they can't screw up with proprietorial crap, like cameras, you're okay, but anything that needs drivers or special transfer software, nah.

Are you looking at the same picture as me?

iPods are far from perfect, but to say that sony is "nicer" looking makes me me think.

Not half. They could add a bottle opener too and I'd never have to buy another gadget.

Don't fuss. It's DG55 and his anit-Apple vendatta - like a moth to a candle flame, old DG55 can't resist making a snide, uninformed dig on 90% of threads invoving Apple. Methinks he doth protest too much...

;)

The ipod bulkier than the bauble-like Sony? I think the pictures speak for themselves. And if you don't believe me go and see them both side by side in the shops...

Sony's product design team need to go outside and have a damn good cull. They come up with some good products in the past, but this thing just looks dated and too fussy. Their best products used to be about simplicity, not luminescent colours and inferior usability.

To be honest I prefer the looks of the Sony when the pictures are side by side. I've not seen the actual units side by side though to be fair.

Sony professional (ie broadcast) gear is superb, but I've not yet seen any consumer software of theirs that hasn't reduced me to a swearing shouting loon in front of a PC.

Put it this way, I'd never buy a Sony consumer product becuase of it, how you fare may be different.

I'm nominally holding out for the flash memory replacement for HiMD, but not unless they get their shitty software out of the way (or someone works out a reliable hack)

Dunno about that. Their consumer digicams are excellent, as are most of their laptops.

And you already probably own bits of Sony in other products you own!

My dad made me laugh the other week. I went over to see him and he said "I've got a iPod!" I was quite surprised and so I said "What - an actual iPod? Let me have a look." and then he went and came back with a Sony MP3 player!

I like the mini-disc player. Simple, small and relatively cost effective. You just shove your music onto those mini CDs, innit? The one that I have uses that horrid ATRAC format. More proprietary bollocks. Sony always seem to fuck up with the s/ware. funny that as they make great laptops. My buddy swears by them.

This new "stag beetle" mp3? Looks shyte but that was my first reaction.

Yeah, but that's hardware. He was talking about Sony software. :)

Anyway, while i think some Sony products are good and some are crap, i'm going to do my best not to give them a single cent after their recently-discovered rootkit DRM incident. They'll have to do a lot of hard work to convince me to trust them again.

(Yes, i know the people who make decisions about Sony DRM probably aren't the same ones who produce their consumer electronics, but i think a message needs to be sent to the company as a whole that if they fuck with their customers they will pay the price.)

As far as i know, the only piece of Sony equipment i have is a VCR. I bought it back in 2000, when i first arrived in the US, and it's given me over five years of flawless service.

Seen both in the plastic, so to speak, the Sony looks alot more cheap and the plastic looks like it will crack quite easily. The white 5G iPod looks better than the black because the scratchs show up less. ;)

Actually a colleague has one of those Sony bean things and I have to say that although way too annoying not to be able to simply drag and drop, the ATRAC format - superficially at least - seemed to give better sound quality for a given bitrate ...

I wouldn't really buy an mp3 player on its looks, but I reckon the iaudio X5 looks pretty smart, got some good reviews as well. Bit expensive at the moment though.
