Now this looks a good 'un: 10 megapixels, 3 fps RAW up to 6 frames, Zeiss lens, Minolta mount compatability snd - here comes the interesting bits - camera anti-shake and (joy oh joy!) built in Anti-Dust vibration widgets.

$999 for the camera plus 18-70 kit lens.

I dont get the differences between this and their previous professional cameras, like the 828 and the R1.

What makes an SLR different from those cameras, and which is better, pros and cons?

The huuuge difference is that it's a dSLR - so you can change lenses and slap on top notch pro lenses if need be.

It'll also have a larger sensor - so better low light performance.

It's got image stabilisation - even better for low light - and I'd imagine the thing will be a lot, lot faster and responsive in operation and more flexible than their previous digicams.

I wouldn't classify either of the cameras you mentioned as 'professional' although they're both capable of taking excellent pictures.

I like that very much. Definitely my choice if I was in the market.

Very nice. I was wondering how long it would take Sony to take on Nikon and Canon. They've been a pro choice in video and sound for many years. The others will follow shortly I'm sure.

--/ I want one now. The more I read the better it looks!

The anti-shake/anti-dust combo sure gives it an edge over my Nikon. And the whopping great 10 megapixel resolution too!

Looks interesting in that it's the smallest SLR with that many pixels (I think!).

The maximum image size -- 3872 by 2592 pixels -- is exactly the same as the Nikon D200.

Maybe the same sensor???

AFAIK Nikon use Fuji sensors - this is from memory so may be wrong - and it's likely that Sony do too.

Looks like the first dSLR I'd buy other than Canon and Nikon. I'd still buy the D70 though I reckon ;)

You are wrong!
Nikon D2X digital SLR camera - CMOS sensor
Striking is the fact that Nikon made the choice to use a Sony sensor for the D2X and not one of their own JFET-LBCAST sensors. Officially Nikon chose the Sony sensor because Nikon couldn't meet the demand for JFET-LBCAST.

I think I would have seriously thought about buying the Sony instead of the D70 if it had been around then. I reckon that anti-shake/anti-dust combo could really make a difference.

I used to keep up with all that "what sensor in what camera" stuff, but I'm a bit lost now.

I avoid dust problems with the D70 by never removing the the kit lens. Well, once -- 2 years ago -- to check for any dust on the back lens element things. I realise this solution is not for everyone.

However, Nikon helpfully pre-installed a couple of bits of sensor dust in the factory.

It seems that they've used quite a number of KonikaMinolta Parts in said camera....
For example the Lithium-ion battery is a stock K/M part, as my DiImage A200 uses the same battery....
Could it be that this was originally intended to be a Dynax series camera, but the design was sold to Sony as part of the deal that K/M made with them...?

Anti shake built in is superb. On Canon you can bet on spending £200-£300 extra on every lens where you want IS. And probably something similar for Nikon's IR.

Yep, I would have also seriously thought about this instead of the 350D.

The Zeiss lenses for this camera look as though they're going to be very pricey indeed. However, Sony's own lenses should be very good and much more affordable.

I definitely want one of these cameras. Plus a lovely set of new prime Zeiss lenses. And, a big motorbike. One of those Yamaha tourers would be nice. And, a big air conditioned tent. Enough fuel to take me to Casablanca and back. A cash point card that never says no...

erm technically sony have always 'taken' on canon and nikon, they make the sensors for nikon and a lot of the electronics for canon, and now they have bought minolta and the last 100 years of lens technology i think this is the result...

They have actually stated that they intend to grab something like one third of the market within 3 years (or, something like that). That is a huge chunk of Canon and Nikon profit.

For me, Sony's best move was aligning themselves with Zeiss lenses.

I've just spent a long time perusing that revue. I am getting an itchy feeling about wanting to get back into SLR photography and this camera is very tempting.

It could become the new 'popular' top end amateur camera to replace the Nikon D70. I can't really afford it though. Once I got the basic kit lens I would then want to go for some long lenses and the money would disappear on all the little accessories and filters and gizmos which I notice that Sony already have announced. They are not daft.

I already did that in a previous life with Olympus. In fact the launch reminds me of the publicity for the early OM1 camera where the emphasis was on it being a 'System' not just a camera, complete with photographs of hundreds of lenses of all sorts along with microscope attachments and other high tech stuff.

I am glad I have got a Ricoh Caplio R4 on order! Get thee behind me Sony.
