Is Paul Abbot not writing any of this series then?

Well, was talking to one of the other writers earlier last year, and supposedly Abbot was slated to write plot outlines for the series and IIRC four full episodes, but succomed to a serious case of writers block.

They reduced his workload and extended his deadlines, but when it came down to it he couldn't even complete a single episode, or the outlines, which makes this series all about other people's interpretation of his characters, rather than having a proper hold over the direction himself which he's had in previous series.

Having had loads of people recommend this to me, I watched it last night. I really don't get it, why is it so popular?

Cos it's funny and touching and about people you recognise rather than the flimsy airbrushed cardboard cutouts you see on the likes of Desperate Housewives and Sec And The City. It accurately reflects that for many people in this country, life is a struggle, but it's not bleak or depressing.

I thought it was fucking brilliant, as usual. However, I'm getting a bit cynical about the 'disaster strikes, things get worse, just when it seems that all is going tits up, it all works out and we have a happy ending' formula.

But Kev wanking in the phone booth was :D :D :D

Yep, was funny, doesn't seem to miss Abbot's input.

Let's hope E4 continue to run the next episode straight after.

Punter getting smacked by huge dong was funny as fuck.

Me too. Doesn't quite wash, them managing to look after themselves. And it's more sledgehammer than subtlety this time round.

I don't think so - they've got film careers to think of now - don't quote me though.

One minor quibble I have is the guest stars this series are too big - not exactly stars, but a bit too well known, especially when Abbott made a speech about using unknowns at some award ceremony last month.

SPOILER ALERT
for example - Jill Halfpenny turns up soon as Kev's wife - surely they should have picked someone less recognisable?

Oooh good, I like her... top lass.

Policeman: We have reason to believe that drugs are being dealt and consumed on the premises.
Landlady: Of course they are. It's New Year's Eve!

Enjoyed that very much. Was strange watching a programme about real-life tourettes sufferers and then switching over and seeing Marty. He's pretty convincing.

I watched this for the first time last night after being booed recently for never having even heard of Shameless. Absolutely brilliant - haven't laughed so much in a long long time.

Still funny - but the 'dysfunctional family' joke is starting to wear a bit thin, like with the third series of The Royle Family. Brave stuff though, especially in next weeks episode.

Ok then - the premise of the show on which the humorous interplay between characters is structured is starting to wear a bit thin.

hmmm, I think it's getting a bit formulaic, but some of the dialogue, the acting and the scenarios are still pretty amazing.

all of this pales to insignificance compared to the burgeoning (and hugely embarassing) crush I've got on Jody Latham aka Lip. He is (or plays) an arrogant, callous, acne-ridden, wildly promiscuous, fatuous, pig-headed little bastard. And i want to lick sweat off every inch of him. get hot & bothered every episode, and the repeated trick of showing the character in nookie-related disaster scenarios is not making it any easier for me. I need help. :(

Steve isn't missed at all. Fiona is tho. Dunno how long they camn really get away with Debbie playing her character. We'll see tho.

Very very silly episode t'other night, and sheer class with it.

What were the drugs Frank was quaffing? They wern't E's and the doctor made it sound like K, but I have never seen K in brightly coloured pills and I thought you could only snort it as it's broken down by the stomach acid before it can enter the bloodstream.

Minor point, but just wondering.
