New Series - Mock The Week

Obviously he says horrible things in his act, but they're fucking hilarious.
It's not like he actually believes everything he's saying! That's comedy. It's a character.

Course, I can't comment on whatt he's like in real life.

Well the example I've given shows that his real life persona is pretty much like his comedic persona. And I don't believe he's playing a character, I think he's a nasty fucker. An occasionally very funny nasty fucker, but it's all pretty bilious

Thing is, even on the show you can see that there's an edge to him which can make him very funny but a lot of his stuff is pretty close to outright misogyny on there.
But he's close to the knuckle on a range of subjects, I havent noticed him being particularly misogynistic tbh- he plays a general misanthrope.

Anyway.
Russell Howard.

I saw him wearing some geeky black glasses on telly the other day. He looked really hot!

Yes, usually they're just drawn from their acts.

Exactly, it's not the spontaneous impressive shizzle you get on Have I Got News For You and the News Quiz, it's 6 sections of 6 comics sets badly edited together.

I still laugh though... just not as much.

Occasionally they are spontaneous, when the conversation goes off on its own.
You can tell when they say something unrehearsed, cos they look delighted with themselves!

Oh, are you saying its scripted?

I dinna think so. .

No, not scripted, sorry. I meant they probably see most of the questions/general areas to be discussed beforehand. Like they do on Have I Got News For You.

This and HIGNFY have become too pompous for me lately. I don't find them funny anymore, it's less insightful witty quips than bitter scripted jibes.

I like this show because it's funny and makes me laugh. Andy Parsons, Frankie Boyle, Russell Howard and Hugh Dennis are all particularly good at making me laugh, leaving aside any personality issues they may have in real life. Dara O'whatsit is funny but I wish he wouldn't do that classic stand-up thing of going 'errrr' after every gag he cracks, it's really annoying.

And I'm sorry to say this, but every female comedian I've ever seen on there has been shit. Lucy Porter: shit. Jo Caulfield: shit. Gina Yashere: shit. In fact, every time I've encountered any of these three they've been desperately unfunny. Perhaps they are better in real life, as it were (I've only seen or heard them on tv and radio) but I would cross the road to avoid any of them based on current evidence.

Hey May :)

Ive felt the same about the female comedians on these type of shows, but I think they have different skills- more conversational type comedy which doesnt necessarily lend its self to quick witted panel shows, the late Linda Smith being the shining exception.

Gina Yashere is the only one Ive seen live (quite a lot over a number of years) and she's on point at what she does- the woman is dynamite live.
On MTW and HIGNFY she probably gets 2 or 3 wicked gags in, but otherwise can be fairly quiet.

In the panel game environment some of the other female guests you mentioned can be slightly overshadowed by the regulars who do it week in week out. That said, some otherwise fine male comedians die on their arse on MTW too- Ed Burn being the one uppermost in my mind. Its a specific skillset maybe, requires major confidence to old your own and get to the unchline ahead of the regulars.

Thinking about it, female newspaper columnists often do better than the guest comedians- esp on HIGNFY. Dont know why that is.

I love this programme, Frankie Boyle makes the whole show for me. He might be an arsehole off stage but that's not really going to taint how funny I think he is, i'm going to see him in November :D

Not that it should make any difference, but I'll just say that a female comic I know has said he's an absolute sweetheart and has helped her out many a time.
So, you know, everyone's got two sides to them.

Mixed success for the guests this week.

Stephen K. Amos is rocking it!

Ed Burn, dying on his arse, AGAIN!

I thought that was crap, switched over after 15 minutes, very depressingly dull. How many jokes can they make about Kerry Katona? It's hardly comic genius is it.

Pity, i used to enjoy this show.

did you think? I thought it seemed out of his depth and not particularly funny - just tried to do a stand-up routine which failed badly :(
You are talking about the bit he did on his parents? People laughed!
It was Andy Parsons and Ed Burn falling a little flat as usual.

I liked the Thatcher stuff!

I would agree with pretty much everything you wrote there apart from one thing

Andy Parsons. Don't know if it's just me but I just don't find him that funny. Not sure if it's just the voice but I find him the least funny on the show.

Frankie Boyle was cracking, as per.

A Centrica Executive is quoted as saying people should put on two jumpers, due to Gas price hikes.

Frankie Boyle: If you are having fuel trouble, don't put on two jumpers, put on a balaclava and find this guy's house.

The gags from the unlikely things a superhero skit were funny from Frankie; the WTC and the Joker one were right on the knuckle! :D

He seems to me to be a fuckton funnier, sharper and quicker than the others. Is the show scripted?
