Interestingly there is a by-election in Scotland on Thursday (Elderslie in Renfrewshire) that will be the last in the country to be fought under first past the post.

The vacancy occured before 3 November 2006 (death of sitting councillor). Any further vacancies that have occured since that date will be held over until 3 May 2007, as every Scottish Councillors' term of office ends on that date and there will be 'all out' elections. However all future council elections in Scotland will be held under Single Transferable Vote not FPTP.

The SSP are standing a local activist in the by-election by the way, though the SNP are hopeful they will win which will squeeze the SSP vote. SoLIdARity declined to contest the seat, so there will be no head-to-heads under FPTP between SSP and Solidarity in Scottish elections before the next UK general election as all other elections are on different voting systems (council, assembly, EU Parliament).

historic i would agree. but that is different to it being interesting.

New Labour narrowly won over the SNP. SSP got 50 votes which is 3.2% (small ward, low turnout). Not a ward they stood in last time - given that the SNP were main challengers and what has happened over the last 12 months, not a disaster by any means.

John Caldwell Scottish Labour Party Candidate 608
Tracie McGee Scottish National Party (SNP) 543
Alistair Campbell Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party Candidate 198
Henry Bradley Scottish Liberal Democrats 159
Gerard McCartney Scottish Socialist Party 50

47% turnout..... which is not low

If it isn't a disaster, then what is it......

How would you define a disaster....

If the SSP can't make inroads into the labour vote now, then when can they....

They came last, and frankly look like the fat boy who comes wheezing in when the winners have got changed (in the school 1500 meters - guess who i was..).

It might not have the profile to qualify for full disaster status, but it's a piss-poor result.

The old Liberal Party (who rejected the merger) got exactly 0 (zero) votes in the Kirkdale ward of Liverpool in 2006. 10 people must have signed the nomination paper but 0 votes were obtained at the ballot box.

Perhaps this could be spun "we are certain to improve on our vote at the next elections".

The Labour Party in Renfrewshire isn't exactly "New Labour"! It is pretty mainstream West of Scotland Labour, and Elderslie is a pretty typical ward, the only thing distinguishing it being that it's one of the supposed birthplaces of William Wallace.

It's a 50% higher proportion of the vote than the SSP got in the parliamentary constituency in the general election May 2005.
