New Landrover Defender from £45k

Nah, the old one was fugly but new Cayenne Coupé looks great. They've squashed it down, lowered it and changed the roof line. It looks like a 911 on steroids now.

Squashed it down? Given that it started life as a crossover, which is just an estate car jacked up a bit, squashing it down just turns it back into an estate car. What you've got there is a VW Passat with chunky tires.

I lease my car because back in 2015 the old A-class was going wrong a few years ago, I had to pay steep tax, MOT never seemed to come in at less than £150, some repairs, it was drinking petrol, the air con didn't work, a bit of wear on the tyres etc.

I ended up getting a brand new Citroen Picasso for 12 months at £150 per month, max 10k miles per year. No tax, warranty, modern car comforts.

After 12 months I got a Skoda Yeti DSG. Great car. Same £150 per month but 8k miles, which I didn't breach, and over 24 months.

My most recent car is a BMW 225xe at £239 per month over 18 months, 12k miles for the duration. More expensive than the other two, but it is a PHEV and I can charge it for free in work. I do about 500 miles per month and spend a max of £10 on petrol and maybe £5 on electric. The rest being subbed by my employer.

I think there's very little in the difference between a cheap lease and running a banger, but you get the benefit of driving a new car with satnav, phone connectivity, heated seats, modern safety technology.

If you're not "into" cars and just want comfortable and reliable transport then leasing is definitely the way to go.

I consider myself to be into cars. But I have two kids that I look after 50% of the time, have nobody to share bills with, live in London and have a relatively meagre wage.

If money were no object, I would buy a Giulia Quadrofoglo, a G63 AMG and either a VW California or a Merc Sprinter James Cook.

It's the lack of money that has me driving what I do rather than the lack of imagination.

New 2021 Ineos Grenadier: name and production site confirmed

From 30 grand and a bit retro. Anything like a big Jimney or an old Landcruiser could be a winner.

There's a customer base for that product there, but the function/price competition for that is overwhelmingly in the £22-30k bracket - if you absolutely need the off-road capability that Inios are going for, then (apart from a very small section of the market) you're far more interested in being able to move stuff than you are people, at which point the need for the cargo to be in a seat rather than in the back of a pickup kind of dies off.

There is a market for a pickup with seats - see the enduring popularity of the Hilux Surf - and they will sell to people who want/need a 4x4 MPV (which giver the price of a Disco etc.. probably isn't a small market), but if your starting price is £10k more than a basic fit L200 you're going to struggle to make a big impact in the working/commercial market.

Given in the ineos interest in the hydrocarbon business, I can see this being hawked to the Middle East and other outposts of the industry. There is always room for a generic fleet supplier - the US border patrol runs about 10k trucks. Once we see stolen ones tearing about dusty places with a 50 cal on the back, then we know they will have been truly accepted as a class leader

I keep thinking about buying a defender. Then I drive one again. Unless you hauling a load of stuff off road. Why would you do that to yourself!

It is to a 911, what a modern Mini is to a classic one - a fat-arsed impersonation of the real thing.
Well it's not an impersonation really is it? They're completely different cars which share a design accent in the same way that that BMW 3 series share a design with the 5 series.

Brownings are passe nowadays. Miniguns are the new hot pick for the discerning Talibani.

A poverty spec Landcruiser is 32k in the UK and will be superior in every possible way to this Ineos thing. They might sell a few on novelty value.

Grenadier starts at 50 grand.

It's actually more expensive than a Defender. Also, no hybrid which feels like a huge gap in the range.

What is the vehicle in this video?

Toyota I am thinking.. Original Landcruiser?

Saw a few in Oz when I was there, 36 years ago .. :/

Bet they were cheaper than a Land Rover !!
