New iPods

I never listen to the radio so don't really care if the iPod has one or not (like FM podcasts are the closest I get). What I'm interested the iPod does (now at a fairly ok price).

I wonder whether Apple are paying Starbucks for the internet access or whether Starbucks are paying Apple for the promo work.

I'd imagine it's probably the latter, but maybe Apple are giving Starbucks a share of any iTMS revenue generated at the coffee shops.

I'm surprised how many here don't listen to the radio; I'm obviously a bit biased, but I don't know what I'd listen to if it didn't exist.

The main reason for not listening for the radio is because during the daytime its mostly repetitious dross with an inane dj who thinks (s)he is funny...

I wish I could get FM/DAB radio on my phone - great for the news and footie score - and I'm a bit surprised that Apple have failed to include any radio on their kit.

Loads of players have radio included, and if was going to fork out for a separate PDA/MP3 player, it would have to have radio.

Thinking about it the only people I know that listen to the radio regulary are those that drive...

There's always Radio 4!

You can still get the radio/remote for the iPod if you want to listen to FM radio.

I must admit, I've got the radio/remote but have never used it. I just download podcasts and listen to those instead.

It sounds like a nice idea.

I've got a Creative Zen Vision M 60GB. The usability is about 3/10. It has a radio which autotunes a whole bunch of presets. There's no DAB or RDS, so you don't get names. You can edit the preset names yourself but it loses them if you scan to retune. You can't tune to a specific frequency if it hasn't been picked up by the autoscan. And you can't record radio to MP3.

As for the voice recorder, I assume this was some intern's drunken weekend project. You can record, pause and stop the recording but if you actually want to listen to it you have to navigate about five menus away to play it. Then navigate back when you want to record. :/

On the Sony TH55, the voice recorder had its own button, so it was dead easy to record audio clips. I used it quite a bit.

Same as the one-button access on the Palm Treo, come to think of it.

There's a user-definable button on the Zen which you can assign to the voice recorder, but that'll just take you into that screen. It won't immediately start recording. And as I said, if you actually want to review the recording you have to navigate miles away. No idea why they just didn't put a play button on the record screen.

I'll be getting a Zoom H2 recorder when they're finally out:

nike-urban75.com offered more dosh, and you can expect a line of Sony-branded glowing rave underpants soon.

Does that mean we'll be getting animated swoosh default avatars rather than bouncing red Y!s?

Great news. I'm off to the States in two weeks and I'll get the 160GB one for around £170 there.

What is more exciting than anything else is that it seems that all the ipods are now running mini OS X.

All the homebrew stuff for the iPhone should now work on the ipods, I wonder how long it will be before we see a Mame emulator?

What, you mean that they've actually got a little computer in them?

Cool. Does it run Word?

Jesus that's been beaten shitless with one fuck off big ugly stick!

This a good move, I was wondering if they'd go down the pda route with the iPod Touch...

You may be asking yourself where is Mail, Weather, Google Maps or Stocks in the new iPod touch. The answer: they are coming, but probably not from Apple. The iPod runs Mac OS X like the iPhone does and we have got unofficial word from inside Apple that it runs exactly the same applications. The exact quote: "they use the same damn binaries."

If this gets confirmed by the usual suspects, expect to see a method to transfer iPhone applications to the touch in no time, with little or no modification. And for those of you future-touch-owners who didn't care about all the independent iPhone software, now it's time to get up to speed.

So - sorry if it's an obvious question, but can I play my dodgy MP3s on this or do I have to buy new ones??? I'm quite tempted :)

That's hardly a big deal though is it?

You can get all that functionality - with far more comprehensive programs - on other platforms.
