The old dog track to the left, opposite the Den.
Thats not the same Den as now is it? And if not where was that old Den?
No its the "old den". The new ground is further across to the left( on Ilderton road) of what was Senegal fields. The old den was on cold blow lane in New cross,It stretched to Surrey canal road and also had an entrance on Ilderton road off of the Old kent road.
Edited to add,, There is now a housing estate on the old ground.
Somewhere near Bridgehouse Meadows?
where John Williams Close (or parts thereof) is now.
Link (I hope) to 1947 mapping - the Bing mapping in the background shows Bridgehouse Meadows being used as a construction site for Overground.
The railway line along the east side of New Cross Stadium was closed before WW1 and one of the stands built over it. The line re-opened a year or two back (on pretty much the same route) to restore the link from Surrey Quays to Queens Road Peckham stations.
Yes.The meadows where just beyond the old ground and had a footbridge crossing Surrey canal road to Senegal fields where the Den now stands.
Puddy cat is correct in regards to john williams close. It carrys a plaque remembering Millwall.
much as it pains me to mention it, the site www.millwall-history.org.uk is quite comprehensive
What's going on with this planning permission debate around The Den at the moment
My friends used to live round the back of new cross, and on the corner of their road was the pub used for the exterior location of "The Winchester" in Shaun of the Dead. Impressive curved corner pub on a back street. Bet it's luxury flats or a tesco now...
this (south london press) has the latest (and link to a previous piece or two)
Has anyone been to a music night at the White Hart?
I want to check out their oldskool soundsystem...and if theres ever a vibe in there
Got a mate playing there this Saturday. Might pop along.
Very different pub these days. Not heard any live music in there though.
i was thinking dj sets in the back room...theyve got what looks like a lovely vintage 60 speaker stack
expensive pub but some great strong beers on tap.
Didnt know that. thanks.
Food in there is decent.
A clip from the film "Once a Jolly Swagman" filmed at the New Cross stadium
I was born and lived about 2 mins from here, so obvs im wall
Infact a number of star brit names were in this film inl Bogarde Dirk and Billy Owen later compo in Last of the summer wine
Always gets me thinking when i see that plaque
Some of the best memories and times EVER for me spent in that area(site of the old Den)
Yet sad as well, as my mother died on that road John Williams close in a care home about 2 mins walk from that plaque
Dementia is one bar steward
Likewise and i still miss the old place. It was a shithole but it was our shithole
Separate names with a comma.
