New character stills from the "Watchmen" movie

Oh, and Tales of the Black Freighter is going to be included in the DVD version - IIRC they're going to do a director's cut that includes it.

:)

Thinking back, the stuff I remember most fondly about Watchmen were the bits of text explaining the different authors and artists who put the Black Frieighter comics together. It gave it a whole extra dimension and added realism. But thinking about it, it'd be pretty hard to stick that stuff into a movie and keep everyone's interest in the ongoing story.

I can't see how the Tales of the Black Freighter would work in a film - the whole point of it is the interplay of the text from the "real" story of the comic and the words and images from the TOTBF comic strip. How could you do it without having a massive amount of jump-cuts/voice-overs?

Personally I wouldn't mind a fuckload of jump-cuts and voiceovers if it meant they could work it in but you're right, it probably wouldn't work. Those extra stories and bits of text are the treats you get for reading an entire graphic novel instead of watching a two hour movie version.

The pictoral-narration interplay is what makes comics great. It doesn't work on film.

Film is thought of as the apex art form of the age, and the belief is that all other expressions will eventual transend into a 2 hour film which will capture the comic/book/play perfectly. And yet it doesn't at all. It hasn't worked yet.

Apparently Gerard Butler will be voicing the anime-styled Black Freighter section of the film:
