New bus porn

Here I thought I was alone.. I love buses.. I have a '81 International that's been converted to a RV..
I would give my left nut for one of the double deckers though..

I always like the look of Wrightbuses - the big screen that's curved at the bottom

They have a few of those shuttling between Luton Airport and the train station and they look really cool. The covered wheel arches make it look like a tram and the driver has the whole front of the passengers bit is frosted glass so you can't see where you going like on a train which is actually not as uncomfortable as you might think.

If they had those as bendy buses in London with a conductor I might be a little more sold on the idea.

Archimage - nice bus  are you in the US? When I was a kid I wanted to live in a converted routemaster. They sold off loads of them when they finished service in London a few years ago for not that much. They were well maintained and solidly engineered and with fairly new engines in them not such a crazy prospect either.

The only time I can remember seeing a working trolley bus was in San Francisco and that had lost it's connection with the wires and was in the way of everyone.

Incidentally San Francisco must have more different modes of transport then just about any place I can think of. Off the top of my head they have trains, metro, trolly bus, regular bus, trams, cable cars and I suppose boats.

Johnny, I think those are the same buses they have in NYC. I've not visited Canada but I always found American commercial vehicles very utilitarian in design. Look built for a purpose and rugged. A lot more manly then our buses and vans anyway.

Those buses are pretty high up IIRC. How do they fair with wheelchairs? There was a big change in direction in London a few years ago when it was decided that all buses had to be wheelchair accessible and so now have flat floors (i.e no stairs to get on), hydraulic suspension and ramps. I think I remember being perplexed as to how those buses are wheelchair accessible as they had a sticker saying they were but had steps up and no obvious way to get on.

Do you also have that cool tape to ring the bell?

I'm glad we don't have trams or trolleybuses here though, there's enough electric and telephone wires and poles to get in the way of my lorry loader crane as it is.

The suspension is designed so that it can lower the front frame when necessary, and the diesel and articulated buses are like this:

Ah, that has a flat floor. Makes sense. The one's I'm thinking of in NYC look pretty similar from outside but have steps up.

Lovely. Don't see why they don't have double axle buses here in London.

It has been done in the past to get round legal restrictions on the weight per axle - the AEC Renown LT class.

and some former Hong Kong three-axle double deckers were used on The Big Bus tourist route in the 80s and 90s.

Ah, seen a few of the Big Bus ones around. But I mean on regular routes. They would surely be ideal for increasing capacity on busier routes.

First Eastern has some ex-Hong Kong three axle buses in Yarmouth, I think they got them because of the price rather than any need.....they get used on service buses, but mainly on school buses and bernard matthews specials.

Yes, I am in Los Angeles.. I really love my bus, it's built very sturdy.. I figure if Los Angeles does get hit by the big earthquake, I will still have a place to stay.. =P

That is very cool mooncat. Reminds me of a little bus that goes around Calais. It's free and takes about half an hour to do a loop and they come every half an hour. They also play music and look very cute. Like your buses little sister.
