New Bar on Brixton Hill

I keep going past and wondering when the fucking hell they're going to put a proper sign up. There's a ponced up black phonebox and some artfully cut-out signage, but nothing which really gives a decent idea of what the place serves. Even the website still doesn't hint at what's going on.

Portuguese and West African cuisine is the only thing it really mentions. More detail needed.

Well the menu I collected is apparently changing (or already has) so these prices may be out-of-date

An idea of starter prices:

Light Soup (Pepper soup with chicken pieces) = £4.50

Kebab - 3 skewers (tender pieces of meat and sweet peppers on skewers coated in a spicy sauce and served with mixed leaves = £5.50

Grilled King Prawns (served with a spicy dip) = £7.00

Some of the mains:

Meat Stew (pieces of meat in a spicy tomato sauce served with either plain rice, jollof, boiled yam, fried yam, boiled plantain or fried plantain) = £12.00

Grilled or fried Tilapia with Couscous (served with couscous and very hot red and green chilli sauce) = £17.00

Marinated Skewered Vegetables (pumpkin, courgette etc served on rice with a spicy dip) = £12.00

Sides

Plain/Fried/Jollof Rice = £4.50

various salads between £2.50 and £3.50

Doesn't look like I'll be in a rush to visit

That menu sounds a little dull. Still, they'd be mad to compete on similar terms against the Gallery. but it's a bit uninspiring and undifferentiated from other places locally, especially at those prices.

The weirdest place I've eaten in locally of late is South Beach, or whatever the place opposite The White Horse is called. Had some kind of weird platter which consisted of lots of mini chunks of meat on cocktail sticks, two types of fried potato (chips) is slightly different sizes and other random bits. Pretty awful really, but not quite as bad as the R23 place next door.

I agree.

Chicken Peri Peri (1/2 flame grilled chicken with Peri Peri sauce) = £9.00

How does that compare to the Gallery?

Probably quite similar for sit down I should think. A lot depends on how much you get.

It would have to be fucking tasty to try and match the Gallery's ribs and chicken though. As close as Brazas is to me, it's a bloody disappointment when it comes to peri peri, even Nandos does it slightly better.

If only the Gallery were closer to me for take away.

The website does indeed look awful.

And how come so many bars / club nights are unable to understand the word "exclusive"?

Where is Donald?

Is anyone still in contact with Donald?...he is an old friend I lost contact with, he also used to also run the Two Eagles which closed down for redevelopment, now very nice & expensive apartments.

Yep The Goose is a changing, but not going upmarket by all accounts. Wait and see I reckon.

Donald from The Hamilton Arms was running it at the end I believe. Which means that he's not exactly struck it lucky with his past 3 pubs - the Hamilton, Hobgoblin and then The Goose....

ETA: Isnyt T&G now the Beach Bar or something?
