New Bar on Brixton Hill

Potential competition for the Gallery?

I hope not - the Gallery ought to get all the help it can, including government subsidy and listed restaurant status IMHO

I do like the wall outside though. I wonder if they're putting as much time and effort into inside and more importantly, into their food

Perhaps like Southside bar, put a lot of trouble into the inside bar decor and not bother their arses with the toilets.

The toilets in there have always been rank so nothing unusual there. In fact they got worse after it stopped being the George IV

not been to the southside bar cos i don't drink in pubs much these days...

but it looks crap from the outside - full of student types cos they're so young, dumb and happy...

Old frontage is off - massive windows are up now. They must have spent a fortune on doing this place up.
I'll give it 12 months at most...

MMMMMM, an Angolan bar?
Will they have competing MPLA and Freelimo corners?
Prob make some of the refugee Sarfies nostalgic for the days of war and turmoil they caused in that poor benighted country

To put my pedantic hat on Frelimo is Mozambique - the other side of Africa.

And the civil war in Angola's been over for six years now - ever since that delightful psychopath Jonas Savimbi was killed.

I like Angolans as long as they don't play their sodding music. It's kind of Swiss Tony meets kwassa kwassa.

Yep, went past there yesterday. Was impressed how different it looks with the glass taking up the whole front. Big improvement on Ellis's :D

:D at Frelimo

I went to Angola once by mistake, easily done when driving through the Caprivi Strip at night. We thought we were heading to Zimbabwe but ended up in Angola for breakfast. The music was bad.

Are there no borders?

seemingly not or maybe they were just Namibians winding us up...at least we didn't stray into southwest Zambia - i once stayed at a farm/hostel in Namibia where they offered you a gun in case the Zambians crossed the river and robbed you in the middle of the night.

Lovely  but would you have used it?

looks packed...been tempted a few times to check it out.

me loves me BBQs.

NO. I drive up the hill every night. Where exactly is it? Say, in relation to the galleria: is it closer to or further away from Brixton?

You'd be a twat to accept the offer in the first place. Zambian cut throat robbers scare me a lot less than bent police.

True, I'd be very suspicious if someone offered me a gun. They'd probably rob you in the middle of the night and kill you and claim self-defence because you had a gun :D

Are there no borders?

Flat and sandy. Some of the roads cross a border with no border post. Until 6 years ago those areas were mainly UNITA controlled - so not much government presence. A mate drove his car round a corner in 'Namibia' (=left hand side driving) and drove into a car that was convinced it was still in Angola (=right hand of the road driving). Cue extensive argument....

There was a rather sad but also quite funny little rebellion in Caprivi a few years back.

One of the main bits of training for the rebels (who were very quickly beaten) was watching Rambo on video:

I went here last week - its run by the same people that have the cafe a little further along towards Oishii. The pide are pretty good - basically like a long thin pizza, and the kebab and rice looked good too. It has a little bar in the back which I sure will see no use whatsoever and its a bit in between trying to be a restaurant, but really being like a cafe. Still good luck to them - foods good and they are friendly.

Are we talking south of the South Circular here? Ie Stretham Hill

It is totally Streatham Hill, yes.

I is a Brixton resident, but a St. Reatham worker. The section between the south circular and the bingo (only landmark i could think of before Caesars).

Ah I've seen that then - on the other side of the road from the Med Bakery?
