New Bar on Brixton Hill

well, it's not there yet, but Ellis's (the old hardware shop that's been shut for ages) is being gutted.

I asked the manager of the curry house what was happening to it as there's been lots of activity and apparently it's going to be a new bar.

That's really needed what with The Telegraph next door but maybe it's a classier sort of bar :D

What was that bar/cafe/restaurant called up past the old Apollo video shop?
It used to do quite good (but expensive) veggie breakfasts and had small jazz bands and cocktails in the evening?

I was thinking about that the other day as I walked past where it used to be. Went for an expensive veggie breakfast there once. Once being the operative word. It was nice but too pricey.

The day we moved into our Dumbarton Road flat we all went there after lugging our belongings around, there was 8 of us and it took nearly 1.5 hours to get the food on the table, i then gave it a second chance and while the food was good the service sucked, i wonder why it closed down?

Originally it was an Art shop

That got turned into Terra Firma (nice)

Then Helen (an erstwhile member of the Boards) took it over and made it into a cocktail bar (I forget the name as well !)

She fell out with her partners and ceased being involved, it slowly descended into oblivion and then closed.

It is now a favorit chicken shop - run by nice guys, but it's not really the same thing is it? Though it does fill a useful niche for pepole who don't fancy going to Pizza Chalet next door

Theres a bit of change happenin at the mo i see...

The Goose has been gutted, presumably for a refit, dunno? And the old Tongue n Groove seems to be turning into a football viewing venue. Dunno if its open yet tho.

Yep The Goose is a changing, but not going upmarket by all accounts. Wait and see I reckon.

Donald from The Hamilton Arms was running it at the end I believe. Which means that he's not exactly struck it lucky with his past 3 pubs - the Hamilton, Hobgoblin and then The Goose....

ETA: Isnyt T&G now the Beach Bar or something?

Is the Telegraph still open? It always looks shut when I go past.

It's definitely open Sunday daytime. All the old George V regulars seem to go there now. Lots of spaced out clubbers gurning and blinking in the daylight outside as many of the local population head for chuch in their Sunday best. An interesting contrast... :hmm:

I wondered what was going on there. Been noticing the snazzy wall frieze (sp?) that's been being sculpted over the past few weeks.

I'm sure this is a really stupid question, I've never been in but, why has the Telegraph got no windows? It looks like some pub in Glasgow that was trying to avoid window tax.

Lambeth's licensing applications page suggests that the Goose is about to be rebranded as "Ivan's Retreat" - possibly a vodka bar:confused:

However, I can't see a licensing application for the former Ellis's Home Care Centre at 226a-228a Brixton Hill. (Confusingly the Telegraph is no 228)

All I can find is last autumn's planning application.

It's amazing, this must be the only application for change of use to a bar in Brixton that absolutely no one has objected to:

£45,000 a year in rent requires selling quite a few overpriced posh lagers, so it will be interesting to see what hours they ask for.

Just been past this new place. Can't remember the name though. Thought it sounded Japanese (Iroko, Oriko, can't remember :o ) but it turns out it's hybrid Portuguese/West African.

So exactly what type of cuisine is that then?

Yes its Iroko. I too thought Japanese, then was confused by the Portuguese/West African. It looks like they have a fair bit of work still to do as well.

MMMMMM, an Angolan bar?
Will they have competing MPLA and Freelimo corners?
Prob make some of the refugee Sarfies nostalgic for the days of war and turmoil they caused in that poor benighted country

I do like the wall outside though. I wonder if they're putting as much time and effort into inside and more importantly, into their food
