New 'back to the land' trend in UK - where can it go?

Inner Londons population continued to grow in the 90's and 00's iirc - the pattern of people moving out to the suburbs to be replaced and internal and external migrants is an old one.

Ah, that's better...

Hmm, no one here defending it as a political act so far. Perhaps u75 isn't hippie enough...

Ill defend it.

Historically speaking I think you can define three key trends amongst the radical left - those who think an alternative system can be grown within the shell of the current system, those that think the current system can be overthrown, and those that think the current system can be guided into a better one.

History has got a lot to say about all of these attempts, but my personal long view of this history is that all of them are important to do, and all have an impact on the wider social world.

If we think about The Anarchist Test Case #1 of North Eastern Spain, with quite possibly its last bastion in Mondragón, its fair to say that Mondragón is an exmaple of seperatism along the commune model. I think more 'outposts' of communalism/anarchism/communism call it what you will, are a good thing - even if they involve 20 people. So good luck to those involved.

That said I think 'evolutionary' politics that engages with national governments is also important, as are the occassional 'revolutionary' moments - but revolutions can be just as damagin as they can be productive.

Anyhow - I do think its a political move on their part - there's 60million people on this island, and there's plenty room to let those who have the will power and perseverence to take this step do so. I hope it goes well for them and would do it myself if i wasnt such a slave to the system!

In my experience, they say it is political because they are desperately trying to divert attention away from the fact that they have left all their skint, squatter type mates and daddy has bought them a plot of land ;)
