new area, new job, no idea what. help!

thanks mate - when i was your age i threw myself into loads of voluntary stuff. my cv isnt very academic but i've done a fair amount of extra cariccular stuff.

darv has applied for a teamleading course and i've gone for drug awareness (my mum rang and asked if i needed to be any more drug aware :D) we'll wait and see if either of us get in.

That sounds cool, best of luck to you both :)

I was thinking of doing short term voluntary stuff and going on the dole + housing benefit. If I concentrate on one area (I was thinking I'd like to work with a homeless charity) then perhaps I could have enough to get a proper job.....?

if you are on the dole most of the local college course are free ;) seriously do one :) try a short one and if you like it do a longer/more academic one.

Wow, I live just outside amd would say the exact opposite! Looking for a job round here is a nightmare.

The way to go about this is to tell some national recruitment agencies that you're looking to relocate.. they can get their local office looking.. ditto letting agencies etc.
If you're moving to Bristol/already in Bristol, the only work you're likely to find through recruitment agencies will be in a call centre: the boom industry in Bristol AFAICT. If you want to do this, then you won't want for work.

Just an observation. Sounds a bit like you're trying to get it all to click into gear at the same time. Moving is obviously stressful and of course an income is needed at the other ond. But I reckon don't try and do it all at once. or at least don't expect it all to work out like. new place to live, new rewarding job etc. Sounds like moving out of London is the more pressing thing. If you're both not happy there it's going to taint your experience of other things. Going to work feeling pissed off etc.

The source of my current dilema employment wise. Trying to get out of an admin role which has left me basically only qualified for the call centre experience.

harrumph.
:(

But. At least there are jobs there. Might be shit dull ones long term. But still better than nothing.

Like any city though, if you have particular skills ore experience there will be some positions somewhere.

I think you'll find thats not strictly true.

I work for a recruitment agency and we currently have ...er... no call centre positions on our books. The big call centre that everyone used to associate with Bristol was the RAC, but they are currently in the process of relocating out to India and making big chunks of their staff redundant.

As I said to you on another thread wiskey, there are some really good dedicated job banks down here, UWE have one and so do Bristol Uni, temping does not have to mean that you work in a call centre. If you really fancy the idea of Conexxions then give them a call and ask them to send you an application form.

Sorry, but that's not been my experience.

i dont have anything against working in a call centre. and i'm quite good on the telephone believe it or not :D

bristol seems to have a massive amount of jobs  trust me i've looked at every job page covering bristol in the last few days. huge amounts of engineering, health, finance jobs etc.

i can see that if you are a 17yo with no experience or qualifications it could be a bit dsifficult. but i'm hoping i can scrape something together cv wise :)

aye might do :)

tbh i'm not at all worried about work. i'm sure i'll find something, and if i dont find something immediately as long as dervish earns loads of money we'll be sorted :D

this thread wasnt about 'ah fuck i cant get a job' i already ahve a job. it was more about 'ah fuck i dunno what i want to do'.

Ive been looking for months and I can't find anything I can do at all other than work in a dreaded call centre (i'd rather be on the dole frankly). But then I've never really thought much of Bristol anyway. YMMV.

Arrrgh! Don't move away, we need you to advise us on what to do in london, everyone seems to be moving away now we're considering coming down there  :D

We considered bristol but decided if we were doing the big city we may as well do the biggest.

wiskers I think you would do really well dealing with the public, but i can also imagine it driving you to distraction at times, please don't work in a call center!

i already sorta do. just we play god.

i personally dont think that london is the best place for you two, i think that you'd suit bristol a lot more. london offers a lot - but a lot of it doesnt appeal iyswim. and that that does appeal is pretty much served in bristol.

you cant find a single job apart from call centres? well yes bristol has a fair amount of them, and lots of people work in them. but more dont.

if you cant find a single job not even as a stepping stone i'd adjust your persective - its probably not bristol putting up the restrictions.

Inbetween dealing with irresponsible and useless employers and a total lack of support or help from the jobcentre, no. I'd rather be unemployed than work endlessly on a telephone in a call centre; I can't see any future in that and the work seems like absolute mindnumbing hell.

i need a new job. i am so miserable where i am i havent bothered going for some weeks. not a good situation to be in.

but i have no idea at all what i'd like to be doing. i kinda know what i dont want to do - but if my dream job is out there i've no idea what it is.

what should i do? i'm currently being paid reasonably well to do something that i hate. we want to leave london and move to bristol. how do i get a job? how do i even search wheni dont know what i want?.
wiskers

I know what you mean about not knowing what you want to do.. I have never known what I want to do.. I'm not sure how people find out maybe its luck....

Good luck with the job move thing :)

V.quick post as 1st day back at work and should be catching up!!

Anyway, prob. repeating someone else but what worked for me was to research employers in the area and send them targeted e-mails/CVs. It's really worth taking the time to do this and spending some time thinking about how you can catch their eye. Never be put off by the fact they're not actively recruiting because if they're sufficiently interested they'll call you in for a chat regardless and you'll be top of mind when they are looking for someone.

I sent out a shed load and got several interviews that way. First job I took didn't work out but I took the same approach again and the first company I got in touch with got straight back to me and I've now been with them almost a year :)

Best of luck! Relocating is scary but I'm so happy I did it - my overall quality of life has improved so much outside of London :)
