I can give you the ins and outs of this if you like.

I think the main thing might have been the way we used to do maintenance, so most of it was done at night. there's been loads of work to change this - and having new more reliable and computer based technology will help - so much reduced need to actually send men down tunnels at night.

Also - there was probably never considered to be the demand for it until recently.

and we're introducing a maintenance system that will allow working during the hours of service - not privy to details but we did get a presentation a while back. It involves a much more rigorous system of taking possessions on the line etc. - presumably one of the things the unions was a bit cautious about.

I have a feeling that may be what the unions are asking.

You can't exactly stand to one side and let a train go past in a tube tunnel...

It's much more extensive than I realised with 6 lines and 24hr tube to Heathrow.

Big step forward, I wonder how it will change the night time economy? Will people go out later perhaps?

Possibly. It'll be interesting to see. My clubs are at a venue a few mins walk away from Oxford Circus, which is on both the Victoria and Central line of course, so I'm sure we'll see a change.

As I said, a much more rigorous system of taking possessions on the line which should provide a safe space to work in even during traffic hours. Trains won;t run while work is going on - and as soon as work is complete and the guys are off the line, trains can run again.

I'm guessing there will be more scheduled shut downs to get planned works done - but I think that it was said that the way engineers book onto the line in the new system should also save a lot of time meaning work takes less time.

I used to work down tunnels myself, for years, so I'd be very sceptical, but the unions do now seem to be happy.

strangely people can already travel around the capital throughout the night. on night buses. i am not impressed with the quality of journalism in the press release, which this article undoubtedly reproduces faithfully.

Part possession or the whole line? Cos it's not like you can turn trains round at most intermediate tube stations.

It's starting with 2 lines. Victoria being one of them , anyone out & about this weekend? One would hope this might help small venues in way out places where people could arrive at 2am etc we'll see. On the other hand is London's night time economy dwindling ?

I've only just noticed that not all stations on the 24hr lines will be open. Suppose that makes sense, though worth being aware of!*

Victoria and Central don't help me much, but Jubilee and Piccadilly will be pretty handy. DLR would be even handler, but, whatever...

*edit: I may actually be talking bollocks here. Having zoomed in on the map so I can actually read the station names, I think it might have just been the spacing that lead me to believe some were missing

The DLR would be a dream, no more night buses! Can't be too hard surely as there's no drivers. :hmm:

Why does no drivers make a difference? There's still staff that would need to be working overnight.

Really didn't quite get the concept of a limited service being better than no service at all.

It was interesting seeing all the train geeks riding the tube last night. Mixed in among that was various cameramen and journalists here there and everywhere. Plus the occasional video blogger.

I've certainly found it a lot preferable to having to take multiple night buses to get from one side of town to the other. Makes you wonder why it took this many years for it to happen.
