Netbooks/UMPCs: compare all the important specs here

Oh, and battery life is *very* important, which knocks the ball back into the Eee 901's court. I think a 10" screen is too big, so a 9" looks a good compromise. The Dell looks interesting too.

Guy here's hacked an EE to run OSX. I really want a mac netbook but there don't even seem to be any rumours. :(
Sure looks like a whole load of hassle and the bloke still can't get any sound.

I've no idea why Apple hasn't come up with a netbook yet because they're clearly very useful things.

Low profit margin on the hardware, I suspect. Combined with fear of cannibalising more profitable macbook and macbook air sales.

Well, there's 'nuff manufacturers out there who clearly think they can make a bob or two from this netbook lark, and Apple could easily charge a premium if they give it their usual highly polished sheen - and what better way to get more people introduced to their way of doing things?

I'd certainly take a very close look at a Mac netbook if they did one, even if they charged £50 more. They could probably do a great job and I'm not so sure it would hit the high end Air boys that hard either.

They are pushing the iPhone/iTouch as their mobile platform IMO. You have a Macbook (Normal/Pro/Air) and you have an iPhone, there's no in-between. Which would be fine if the iPhone/iTouch was actually a proper mobile computing platform but it patently isn't; it looks nice but you can do far more with a Palm and even _that_ isn't a proper mobile computing platform.

This annoys a lot of the old guard - I can't count the number of times I've heard "we need a replacement for the 12" powerbook!" - but I fear that it means there won't be an Apple netbook in the near future. I've not even seen it on the rumour sites. They do occasionally mention a tablet, but tablets are quite specialised.

I still think there's a *massive* opportunity waiting for Apple if they released a slim, sleek, longlife hybrid e-reader/netbook with books/mags/videos/music available via iTunes.

It's not so much the screen as the keyboard. It's not too hard to look at a slightly smaller screen but below a certain threshold the keyboard is very hard to use.

I haven't used the newer Eee PCs yet but in terms of build quality, especially on the keyboard and screen, the Advent is streets ahead of the Eee 701.

Me too, although I strongly suspect it would be designed and marketed as a 'big ipod' rather than a 'small computer' and would be based on the ipod touch OS and interface.

Yes, that's the problem, it just wouldn't be at all useful for me or a lot of people. I need a netbook that can run full-fat Leopard, or at least Leopard with some eye-candy removed, if that's not mixing my food-related metaphors, so that I can read and write everything natively, run BBEdit and iWork and NoteBook and iCal. It doesn't need much power but it needs to be directly compatible. Otherwise I might as well just get an Eee. Which I did.

Read a review of about six note books in an "What PC", (or something like that) mag. The Asus came out best for battery life and general use. /me wants
- good battery life (~3hrs}
- decent disk size, (> 50gb)
- wireless eee900 wifi device comes with an Atheros chip! ;-)
- not so small that typing for > 20mins will hurt because the kb is too small
- don't really care about web sites as all i would want to do is shell into loads of other machines. hence wifi.

...point... I guess it depends on your usage. For me, the chances I'll be using it in a field with no power available are slim to zero. If I do, then a couple of hours is probably enough and on the odd occasion it's not, then tough, that's just life. Against that, I will be carrying it around day after day and the reduced weight over a longer lasting battery is far more important. There are supoposedly 6cell batteries available, or shortly to be come avail;able, and a project to roll yer own better battery, but personally I'm quite content with a light one.

I am too. It's an intriguing idea to have HSDPA available but the costs are astronomical and my Advent works well enough with my phone, the faff is minor. I'm not sure I'd spend an extra 60 quid on the 4213, but other people use theirs differently.

Have you found the wiki and forums at http://msiwind.net/ ?

I've been using the wifi in the pub. Using my phone is extortionate.

Yes I have. Helpful bunch. It's a great resource. :)

I like my 4211 so much I'm considering using it as my main machine.

£75 gets a Western Digital Passport 320GB USB drive. Swap the drive in that for the one in the Advent and that's more than enough for me for the moment.
