Netanyahu pushes to define Israel as 'state for Jewish people only'

The anti-legal reform protestors chanted "Where were you" at the police who turned up for them sharpish but let Hawara burn. There is hope.

I found this overview really useful...Andrew Feinstein seems very sound

People have said this stuff (about Israel being or becoming fascist) since Israel's formation though. The difference now is that internal dissent was always allowed among Jews and to some extent other non Palestinian residents, and the likes of Kach etc were kept out of state power and even jailed. Now they have brought into the heart of government people who are the equivalent of Golden Dawn or BNP type fash here and given them top positions.

Is it fascist? Or is it theocratic? (Not that either is good.).

Is this being driven by the Jewish equivalent of the Taliban?

Or is it simply trying to legitimise a blatant land grab?

One thing is sure, the direction of the current Israeli government is not going to enhance their status in the world.

Both. Bibi was always this person. Never forget, the man led protests where an empty coffin with Rabin’s name on it was paraded through the streets. Rabin’s widow held him personally responsible for what followed. He knew that some rabbis in his circle had issued a rodef (better known in an Islamic context as a fatwa), he happily appeared alongside them, and he feels no guilt that someone acted on it. He has always been a vile character, ready to incite the most horrific things up to and including murder, by the supremacists and fundamentalists he freely cultivates.

Then there's this guy. Actually been in jail for hate crime ffs

He's mentioned here:

Last weekend, Israel went to the brink. Netanyahu fired his defence minister, who had called for a pause in the judicial “reforms”, prompting hundreds of thousands to pour into the streets, spontaneously and late at night, to say no. The trade union movement called a general strike, which, incredibly, was supported by their bosses: imagine the TUC and CBI in joint strike action to oppose the UK government. Leaders of local councils, including some from Netanyahu’s own Likud party, went on hunger strike to protest against their leader’s “judicial coup”.

Eventually, Netanyahu backed down, announcing a “time out” on his plans. But he has not dropped them. He could well bring them back in a tactically smarter way: piecemeal, so that there’s no single, rallying focus to galvanise the opposition. What’s more, he threw a terrifying bone to one of his most extreme coalition allies. To win backing for the pause, Netanyahu announced that his security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, a far-rightist with convictions for racist incitement and support of a terror organisation, would be allowed to form a new “national guard” directly under his own command. That ugly sound you hear is the echo of a dark history.

And:

Scary stuff.

Over 200,000 at first weekend rallies since overhaul law passed
Times of Israel 29/07/23
Monday’s vote saw lawmakers approve a measure that prevents judges from striking down government and ministerial decisions on the basis they are “unreasonable.” The law was approved by all 64 coalition members — with the entire 56-strong opposition boycotting the vote — despite the sustained mass protests, vehement opposition from top judicial, security, economic and public figures, repeated warnings from allies, chief among them the US, and thousands of military reservists vowing to quit service.

Protest organizers have vowed to keep the demonstrations going.

Hundreds of thousands of people protested across the country against the overhaul. Some 174,000 people gathered for the main rally at Kaplan Street in Tel Aviv Saturday, according to Channel 13 news, which cited the Crowd Solutions firm. Tens of thousands of others protested in some 150 other cities, towns and intersections across the country, including a reported 25,000 in Haifa, thousands in Jerusalem, and what organizers said were 17,000 in Kfar Saba.
