Neil Young - "Prairie Wind"

It just depends when you came to the music. I heard and fell in love with the first one first, when it came out.
Yes, but you're very old. Chronological order is over rated.

I came to Neil Young in 1979. But having explored his other stuff, I wouldn't recommend Rust Never Sleeps as an "in".

Yep, Cowgirl in the Sand in someone's parents' basement family room, all whacked out and playing hyperventilation games....
It's a top track Johnny :) One of the first Neil ones i pulled off on the guitar. I like that period too  Sugar Mountain etc ;)

I wouldn't recomment Rust Never Sleeps either. But like it or not, the classics often come from the first albums. I think most artists have something to say, and they get it out in one or two or three albums, and the truly great might have something relevant that lasts longer than that.

i go through phases with Young, sometimes i'll completely immerse myself in it, and i have a bunch of really rare bootlegs (a couple on vinyl).

my big three would be Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere, Goldrush and Zuma. which is kind of obvious, but there you go.. honourable mention for the first Crazy Horse album too, especially for the original of I Don't Wanna Talk About It. Whitten was a big loss..

Agreed but listening to Bandit on greendale as we speak i think Neil's still putting it out. I hear he got real sick just prior to this new release. :(

You misunderstand me; I would recomend it, just not as an "in". Same as I love the Fall's 'Hex Enduction Hour', but wouldn't recommend it as a first listen to Fall virgins.

yeh, some kind of cerebral thing - an embolism or tumour or somesuch.

which is more serious than 'cutting his hand slicing ham', which is why he cancelled the last gig i had a fucking ticket for

The problem with Neil is he's been such a plastic whore. He's changing into this that and everything, and who knows why. Maybe it's his insecurity complex from being a canadian.

I think the early stuff was the real him, but luckily, some of the later iterations, like the Shocking Pinks, can work.

Other times, it's like Trans.

Yup i have a few boots from the shocking pinks period and some with the MG's. I like the stray gators period probably best but I suppose its a time thing. I'm always jealous of people who got it new at the time though going back in time always leaves you with homework to do on the times but that's fun too. I was intorduced to Neil through my pot smoking hippy older brothers of mates and their love of CSN in the early 80's. I went straight to his accoustic stuff but i've gradually worked my way through the lot. He's got a hunger for experimenting though which has worked well most of his career even his reinventing himself as the GF of grunge with pearl jam was class. :D

I think Canadians have done well for Neil being local in my book anyway. Most of them i've met were nice folk :D

forgot bout trans; knew folk would knock it but i like it and arc); not as much as other stuff but still think it's cracking.

aye, forgot about everybody knows; prob now:

1. tonights the night
2, everybody knows...
3. zuma

well, just downloaded Prairie Wind, so shall be listening to that today - be bloody lucky if it comes close to matching his really best stuff -

On the Beach
Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere
Arc/Weld

finally had the chance to listen to it properly (ie all the way thru on two headphonesm, rather than stopping & starting with one on/one off), and it's perfectl;y fine. nothing out of this world tho. mefeels some journo's are being soft on the old bugger cos of the nearly dying thing. or maybe it's a grower.

I thought the Shocking Pinks were ace, btw.

Yup i back to backed it a few runs today and i think it is a grower, we'll see. I recognised quite a few of the riffs though, bit of creative recycling going on in there especially in This old guitar ;)

I like it though, but then i would i suppose. :D

Just got the figure which dvd/extra's version to buy now
