Neil Young, erratic genius

Harvest and After the Goldrush are wonderful records, but apart from that I can take or leave Neil Young. I've heard one or two of his other albums and never been that impressed, although I should give some of his more recent stuff such as Sleeps With Angels a listen.

Rainingstairs has a good point. I love my vinyl copy of Harvest dearly: it sounds so much better than on CD.

Definitely try Harvest Moon.

And definitely vinyl only. Some music just gots to be scratchy to work.

Talking of vinyl, my folks gave me one of those USB turntables, just about to start getting my vinyl onto iTunes. Audacity can sort out the hisses and scratches and the like ... can't wait to compare the quality of vinyl - v - CD for Harvest ...

A swarfegad-up 'Harvest'? Don't know if I like that idea - the scratches are a large part of the je ne sais quois, surely? :(

I might even mash it up with summat

Drizzled with Brown Sauce*

*Keith Chegwin, Noel Edmonds and Maggie Philbin's seminal early '80s new wave band, fact fiends

Spiced up with some Red Hot Chilli Peppers

Just come back to mention Buffalo Springfield because no one mentioned them yet and they deserve a mention in a Niel Young thread and I think they've already been mashed-up by someone lots.

:)

My memory perhaps deceives me...

Maybe it was '89 - I have distinct memories of him playing a set entirely on unaccompanied electric guitar in a brown lether jacket that was barely hanging together. :D

No, that was David Soul

I've been collecting Neil Young bootlegs for a fair few years now. I've got several hundred now i think:o :D

This is a nice collection that's up for download in many places.

'Harvest' is what I listen to when I am in a very dark place,I find it helps me get in to how I am feeling and work through it and really feel it.

Even your saying that has put those weary, gentle first chords of Out on the Weekend in my head ... and the scratch that runs across the record through Heart of Gold.

I think I know what I'll be sticking on the stereo as soon as I get home...
