That's not your fault at all. If you open your door into traffic and hit someone/cause an accident, you're entirely to blame.

You could have kept yourself safer by not getting into that situation, but you could be even safer by not riding at all. It's not compulsory, at least here, to keep a door's width away from parked cars.

I nearly ran over a squirrel on the highway yesterday.

He was just sat in the middle of the road, I slammed my brakes on and went straight over the top of him.

My daughter saw him run off into the bushes but I felt sick for ages.

dont slam on the brakes for something as small as a squirrel, what if you caused an accident or overturned your car?
