Near empty plane flies Atlantic

This is indeed pretty rubbish but you can see the logic behind the decision

The solution is to increase the cost of air travel by taxing fuel so the polluter pays. That way the industry will sort itself out how to organise flights by itself so full flights become a rule.

Fuel already makes up a huge proportion of airline's expenditure (if crude oil prices rise from $105 to $120, BA's 10% profit margin will be wiped out and they will just break even)

What are you going to do, tell people they can't go to America just yet because enough people haven't come back recently all the planes are over there?

The average train load is 60 (thats throughout the network - all day , each day)

Thats not to say there arent trains carrying fresh air - and a lot of badly crowded ones. For freight - the more specialised the wagon type - the more likely it will run empty in one direction (thats the way it goes)

There is a balance betwen running a public service and economies. The only train route that doesnt run unless there are reasonable numbers (20 I think) is the Snowdon Mountain Railway.:) Optional servie of course.

Useless fact of the day .....!
