Native American Wisdom

Put simply, by the end of the 1840s there were too many Commanches raising too many horses and hunting too many bison on too small a land base.

I think there's some examples from ancient history of early Americans hunting species to extinction but I don't think the Comanches make a good sample case - they didn't have horses (or guns) before the European settlers arrived.

IIRC the evidence suggests that wherever humans have arrived (the Americas, Australia, New Zealand as recently as 1000AD) a very rapid extinction of species (particularly large animals) has followed.

They got both the horses and guns prior to actually meeting the European settlers.

Yep, same as that uncontacted Amazon tribe in the news the other week probably has some machetes, a hammer, and a Crazy Frog ringtone...

Only after the last tree has been cut down,
only after the last river has been poisoned,
only after the last fish has been caught,
only then will you realize that money cannot be eaten. --The Cree People

they did not take more from nature than nature provided, like we do (for which we will very soon have to pay our dues)
Max, you are very silly sometimes.

They were humans who survived the way humans survive. Where resources were limited, there was conflict, as with all human groups. And in, for example, the Potlatch systems of nations in the Northwest, there was lots of scope for excess and depletion of resources.

And of course to speak of the diverse cultures of pre-genocidal European-conquest North America as if they were one homogenous group is absurd.

First they came for the Communists, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Communist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me.
German wisdom 20th century.

IF you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: 'Hold on!'

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
' Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch,
if neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man, my son!

Isn't it wonderful how Post-industrial revolution Europeans could write poetry. They were so wise.:)

Natives fought even for the sake of fighting regardless of resources. It was sort of a sport based often on very old grudges. War parties would go for hundreds of miles through other tribes territories just to ambush and capture members of a tribe they were after. It was also based on ethnicity or language groups.
