National Demo for Civil Liberties ?

R.I.P.
Right, I think we need one, quite urgently.

As I don't have 10s of 1000s of £s lying around, I can't really organise this myself, but heck I don't just want to sit around thinking 'I wish someone would'.

So urbanites, what can be done ?

firstly you dont need thousands of pounds, although a few hundred would help

what is needed is lots and lots of committed people, to get those people you need to establish consesnsus that this is a good idea and that it is worth devoting energy to

urban might be a good place to try and establish that, although general might call up more and divergent support then dusty old p&p, im interested, im sure others would be

it enough folk show an interest than a meeting needs to be called, probably a closed meeting of those concerned followed by a widely advertised open meeting

if consensus is agreed at the meeting to go ahead and various conditions agreed on eg co-operation/non cooperation with police, sectarian/non sectarian, single issue or broader etc then may be the time to talk to larger groups like liberty or no2id as well as smaller groups who can all agree to work around the frameworks agreed

if its a popular idea then the network will grow, ideas will spark off a plan will form itself

next stept pick a date and announce it as pubically as possible

then wed be committed, all we have to do then is organise puyblicity, stewards, speakers, entertainment, dealing with cops, legal support, press, transport, medics yadda yadda

believe me though thats the easy part

First: a name for the proposed new law. "Sus laws all over again" is tempting but (a) only works for older readers and (b) they're not sus laws, they'd be laws for stopping without sus!

Second: humour. A-B march against random stops... nah.

Everyone turns up to the monthly Parliament Square mass lone demo and forms orderly queues in front of every cop until they take down selected details of our recent travels... "and then I went to the chip shop..."... Maybe.

Heh, all joking aside, to begin with the mass lone demo is probably the most realistic option for me.

I think laptop is right, time to merge these threads...
I dont follow.

I think a national civil liberties demo would be great and I cant stress enough how much I think this is needed. Get people on board and lets see what actions people want, lets get creative juice flowing. Hopefully we could move away from the top-down marches that have been pushed on us for the last few years.

When they're done right, marches can be a brilliant start, they can be a great show of the numbers and a good way to kick start a campaign, I think people get to down on the whole idea of demonstrations because of the car crash that was STWC.

I actually think your idea for a stunt queing in front of the cops would be pretty good, but I don't see how it contradicts the idea of having a march.

Ah, I thought you meant stick to practical discussion on here (what kind of tactics should we use, how do we do it, when do we do it, etc.) and keep the political discussion on the other thread.
