Naples - anyone been?

so is Sorrento. convenient for mt vesuvius, pompeii, herculaneum and capri. also for visiting positano and amalfi and other towns/villages along the coast, including Naples for a visit. :)

Depends what they want but Naples just doesn't seem like a very holidayish destination.

Hotel Eden Roc. I stayed there a few years back and I liked it.

well yes, might get a better offer on one of the hotel booking sites....

I decided on Positano because I just wanted to stay at that hotel. :o

the rooms all have terraces rather than balconies with fab fab fab views, and the rooftop swimming pool was divine. :)

Yeah, I loved the look of the pool and individual terraces.

Don't think she'll get it as cheap as she wants so any other suggestions most welcome

try venere.com there are plenty of hotels to choose from in Sorrento and Positano,

and Naples I expect. :p

This is what Naples looks like at the moment:

From what i've heard the chap on the moped should have half a dozen stolen handbags swinging from his shoulder to give the full picture.

And that's coming from friends of mine who are FROM Naples. It sounds utterly beserk. Like an entire city has adopted the dynamics of a pirate ship as it's social model

If they want to make Sorrento their base, I didn't stay here but, I always looked at it rather enviously and it's well located and about the right price.

You'll get a bit more for your money in sorrento, and it is easy to spend a day or two going up to Positano and Amalfi. But also pretty easy to get to Pompeii etc.

Looks nice enough. I think they're holding back at the moment to see what happens with the rubbish situation :D

Actually, the 'rubbish situation' looks pretty cool to me. I loved it in '79 when there was piles of rubbish stacked up everywhere. Plus rubbish = rats. and rats are cool. the bigger the better :)

Sorrento if they want a bit of town feel, a bit busier, Positano or one of the smaller villages along the coast otherwise.

I'd recommend Sorrento. It's only 1hr from Naples on the train. The trains aren't ace but are cheap and reliable ime.

I think Naples will be ok by May, the rubbish issue hasn't been on euronews for weeks, but I still wouldn't want to spend more than a day or so there. I just thought it was a bit dirty, busy and not my cup of tea tbh.

oh well, too late as they've booked it anyway :D

Let us know how they got on, minnie? and then we can all laugh and say 'we told them, they didn't listen! :p

Naples has a faded grandeur of its own. Like some aristocratic lady who has fallen on hard times.
Watch out for the taxi drivers, they drive like lunatics. We had one, a bald midget, who spent the whole journey turned facing my wife in the back seat whilst trying his damnedest to give her the old Southern Italian charm. When we reached our hotel he jumped out of the cab & opened the door for her & then we saw he was 5'2" tall.. He then gave a full mock bow & kissed her hand. That was worth a good tip on its own.
