Anyone taking part in National Novel Writing Month this year?

For the uninitiated, it is a internet thing where one aims to write a 50,000 word novel from beginning to end all in a month. The aim is not craft a masterpiece but on the contrary to trade in all your pretensions and self-censorship in exchange for a fast and furious adventure into the unexpected. I can't recommend it enough. You can never predict where you'll end up but it's great fun getting there.

Third time around for me. I sort of succeeded in 2004. I wrote 50k but there quite a few holes in my story (which still haven't been patched) Last year, I tried to work in strictly linear fashion and perhaps as a consequences I failed miserably, falling short by 30,000 words (still working on that one too) This time I'm going to make it or I'll eat my words!

You should do it too.

i did it last year, it dominated november for me, i became obsessed with word count, excel spreadsheets the lot:o not sure if i'll do it this year tbh

I do it every year!
Except in the last two I failed miserably.

It's still fun though. Yay!

Every year when I get the email in October reminding me the time is nigh I get all excited for about 10 seconds and then realise I hardly have time to wipe my arse at the moment, let alone create a lasting piece of outstanding literature.

Oh, and I lack a way with words :o

onemonkey you're fuckin bonkers

They say everyone has a book in them though

tbh honest you can write 50,000 words of complete nonsense for this thing:D

Haha each year I started out with good intentions to do this, but stopped.

:(

I used to write a lot when I was younger... Has kind of fallen away in the past few years...

I tried last year, and failed about half way through chapter one when I realised I didn't have a clue who any of the characters were or what they were going to do.

You need a PLAN I reckon.

Not going to do it this year for sure.

i didn't plan mine last year, just ploughed on, it wasn't really writing a novel, more a 50,000 word ramble

That's what I'm going to do marty. The only way I can write 50,000 in such a short time is to do something rather unfocussed. So I'm going to have 10 different concurrently running stories which meet at the end. Heck, it did Iain Banks perfectly well for much of his career!

Tried to get round to doing it last year and just couldn't be arsed, and this year i'm gonna be way too busy in november to even think about it  :(

I'm kind of tempted...

But those who have completed nanonovels...what have you done with them? If it doesn't lead onto anything else, isn't it all a monumental waste of time?

I'm not approaching this with the right attitude, am I?
:D

every year onemonkey posts this and i think of an excuse not to do it.

this year my only excuse is that i don't have a functioning computer of my own.

shall i sign up anyway and see what i can achieve on shared computers?

Yes, bluestreak!

I got a literary agent with one Nanonovel (heavily edited post November, of course.) :)

I still intend to try it again this year. Try anyway.

I don't think so. I think it's good for one, on some level or other.

i'm tempted now, i had an idea the other day which could stretch, mind you, the idea is only about 50 words (49,500 to go:eek: )

We had fun last year :) Just try it again Marty, just try. I have no ideas and have other stuff that needs to be written tonight & tomorrow, but I'm still gonna give it a go on the 1st. I still have my old log in from last year  I had to change my age though :( It's _lolita_ for anyone that cares.

I miss Mightyaphrodite now :(

it was fun, it helps when others are there, sharing the pain:D

i'll start it under the same log in, i think i'm marty21 on there as well

it might mean bye bye to november, i hardly went out last year, and when i was i was thinking about how to stretch the story with meaningless conversations
