Name the county with the maddest place names

Ryme Intrinsica

There's a picture in the family album of my sister and myself on either side of the name sign for Ryme Intrinseca. It's in Dorset, and Dorset surely takes the biscuit what with Piddletrenthide, Puddletown, Langton Herring, Dungy Head and Burnt Bottom.

Devon is an island of normality between the strange placename hotspots of Cornwall and Somerset.

Indian Queens, Zennor, London Apprentice to the west of us, and Huish Episcopi, Curry Mallet and Spy Post to the East.

Gweek, Come-to-good, and Mousehole, all in Cornwall. :)

It's a fantastic sounding name.

Don't talk to me about Puddletown/Piddlestown/Puddleton/Piddleton! (Ancestry related!)

I've always liked the good commonsense approach of sheffield - Low Edges and Nether Edge...don't fall off now.

i used to drive thru New Zealand on my way to work................

in Wiltshire.:D

Other than that, Somerset roolz for daft names :D

One of my mates who lives in Essex thought Heckmondwike was a joke name.

Then there's Much Hadham, daan saaf somewhere.

I think there's a Nod Hill somewhere in South London.

Near where I live, (in Yorkshire, say no more), there's a hill known locally as Went Pimple, and there used to be a path, now non-existent, known locally as Cranky Pin.

And in Conisbrough there is a road called Butt Holes Road.

Angarrack means the rock and is also a local surname, but that's not funny, so I'll not translate any more strange Cornish place names in case I kill this thread :(

Carry on as you were

Nobody's mentioned the village of Twatt in Shetland!

Within a few miles of me we have Sneep, Hundy Mundy, Muckle Thairn, Nether Blainslie, Trows, Potsclose, Wormerlaw, Lurdenlaw, Pittlesheugh, Plendernethy, Turtleton and Middlestots.

ok, you win :D :p :D

Twin villages Sheepy Magna and Sheepy Parva in (I think) Leicestershire.

Also Thornton-le-Beans in Yorkshire.

Yeah, they are in Leicestershire. There are quite a few... Wigston Parva and Wigston Magna, Peatling Parva and Peatling Magna, Appleby Parva and Appleby Magna etc. It's down to the Romans innit. I think Parva means 'Little' and Magna mean 'Great', hence why there is usually one of each.

There are also places like Blaby and Groby in Leicestershire.

These names win handsdown, they even put the West Countries name in the shade:D
