Nails and Nail Varnish

My nails are rubbish. Then the sun comes out and they get a bit less rubbish and I get overexcited and throw nail varnish at them. then they all break, several of them at the quick and I take the varnish off and they are horrible and dry and flaky underneath and generally back to being rubbish. This is where I am now. :(

Can anyone recommend a good clear protector to put on under the varnish. Or have they tried the ones referred to in the post above with the link to salongeek?

Until then I was enjoying Rimmel lasting finish bright red. It did last quite well, by which I mean 3 days.

have you thought about taking a vitamin supplement? if your nails respond so quickly to the sun then perhaps you're a bit low on vitamin d.
i've heard good tihngs about opi's nail envy. you use it as a base coat and can reapply over the polish which supposedly makes it last longer too.

A good point, they did seem to blossom really quickly for the sake of a few sunny days in May..

It'll take more than a little sunshine to repair them now. I'll look into opi, thanks.

I use Sally Hensen 'hard as nails' strengthener for that manicured but also helping them grow look, and I like maybelline nail varnishes. :)

the sally hensen spray tan thing is amazin' so if the nail strengthener is anything like the spray defo go for it!! sorry i cant help more then that.

I have long nails but it's a pain in the arse when I'm using the keyboard at work and break a nail. The guys think I'm being such a girl's blouse when I moan about it. :o

I prefer dark nail polish like black tulip or purple, though I like gold or silver on occasion. And Chanel is my preference, when I'm able to treat myself.

Otherwise any brand will do.

It's not possible to have ten good nails at the same time. That's the law - one of the buggers always breaks just as you've got them all nice and the same length. (today's casulty is the right thumbnail - bah)

I like having nail varnish on, but I'm shit at doing it and my stumpy hands aren't really suited for it. Also, playing guitar means that I always chip it off soon after I've done it.

Those are my go to choices as well.

There's a fantastic pinkish shade of essie called Cafe Forgot that is subtle and a perfect shade of pink.

I have longish nails for the first time ever,
I have always bitten them.
I have some old 'diamond hard' pail pink polish on them as it seems to be keeping them rock hard and stopping any breakage.
I want to paint them in colours but need advice on a under or over coat to protect the nails and colour.
Also any advice in the best way to moisturise and file will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers :o

i told you already kitty, purple or pink.

other than that, i know nothing :)

Thank you. :)
I want to get some purple but I am not really a pink kind of person (apart from 1 t-shirt that I love).
I was more thinking in terms of care to stop them breaking/splitting and keeping them healthy looking.

Does anyone know if either eating jelly or 'Hard As Nails' or a similar product really work?

Fed up of breaking my nails!

There is one that has some kind of protein stuff in it... you apply a coat every day for a week, then take it all off, before starting all over again.

It worked a treat when I had my false nails removed.. they were weak as piss intially, but are now stronger than they ever had been before.

As for nail varnish, reckon I've tried them all and that Boots No7 are the best. Lasted well over a week with hardly any chipping. OPI didn't even last a day before my nails made me look like a two bit whore.

I threw everything away and only use Boots No7 now.

Cheers. Will have to give something like that a go as I've broken about three nails since my last post on this thread!

I like Butter London nail polish as it doesn't stain your nails.

I really want these, new OPI colours for Alice in Wonderland, esp the Mad as a Hatter one (multi coloured glitter)

This post is dedicated to pogofish ... :D

I've just bought three Models Own Pro varnishes - and they smell amazing! I didn't know you could get scented polish. Just done the first coat of 'Candy's Pink' - it's fairly nu-rave.
I heart nail varnish. I wear lots of blues and greens. Currently got a pretty old vampish red on my toes, I think it's Rimmel. I like Rimmel for cheap and cheerful, but the colours are best at Nails Inc and now Models Own, I think. Nails Inc 'Albert Bridge' topcoat is amazing, makes colours last for up to a week.

In my head I'd go for nail varnish in bright colours. And high heels.

Can't do the nails on my right hand though to save my life (I've tried the usual tricks to stop the non-dominant hand shaking), and high heels just aren't practical. :(

Tried going to a nail bar, but the overwhelming smell stopped me getting through the door. Are there any low odour nail bars within a bus ride of Brixton? BTW I don't want fake nails or long nails, just a manicure and varnish. Thanks in advance.

I hate gardening in gloves because I can't feel what I'm doing and despite my best efforts with nailbrush and pokey-aroundy under the nails thingies I can't always get all traces of earth removed and it it looks horrible. Maybe no-one even notices but I do and it really irritates me.

Anyone know of an OPAQUE polish? Preferably a really neutral colour, pale pink or beige. I don't really want pearly either. I'm not a very make up sort of person (in fact not all all) but I know EXACTLY what I want. I have no idea where to get it or what make to go for. I have never worn nail varnish.

Google has not been my friend. It seems opaque colour is always garish and U-V glowsome. I bought a really nice colour today but even after 5 coats it's not opaque.

Basically I don't want to waste any more money on nail varnish that doesn't fulfil its purpose. For some reason I thought it would be a couple of quid a bottle.

 Clearly not!

There's a rimmel one in a nice pale pink that should be about £2.99 a bottle. It's called something like cupcake. Have a look in Boots but if you can't find it I've got a bottle you can have as I've just bought a load more colours (nail varnish addict :o)!

Well, my nails are a massive success! At the moment I have nails that look like a semi-precious stone. Base coat a coppery colour. Then silver craquelure topped with a reddish brown transparent polish. The best thing is that everyone asks where I got them done and I say "I did it myself."

Funny how I've gone from "I want nails that look completely natural" to "Look! How unnatural is this?" in the space of a few weeks.
