I think 'Enter the Wu Tang: The 36 Chambers' by the Wu Tang Clan is a classic as well.
My favourite album of all time, but I think in terms of impact and subsequent effect, "Straight Outta Compton" wins.

Perhaps the Beastie Boys' "Licensed To Ill" should be mentioned too.

Doggystle made the genre for me.

Closely followed by Dogfather.

On a more modern thing, I quite like the articulate flow of Naz

err you know nas dropped illmatic the year after snoop's doggy style?(93/94 respectivly) Nas has been around for ages.

Nas is by far my favorite mc though.

Nation of Millions is a truly astounding album, one of those that transcends its repsective genre. It's hardly a surprise that it's one of the few hiphop albums to consistently pop up in or near the top 10 of virtually every rock/indie-centred top 100 album poll...

I think that just edges "The Chronic" for me. Essentially they're the same musically, but Snoop is much the better rapper than Dre, and his languid voice just wraps around the beats so fluidly.

The only thing that pisses me off with snoop is the for shezzy my nezzy crap code speak he does. Oh and the albums he did with pharell before blue carpet came out. They were shit.

The Neptunes' stuff (it's not just self-obsessed Pharrell you know) can be a bit more stacatto than Dre's early 90s style, which I think Snoop fits better to. "Who Am I (What's My Name)" is a masterpiece.

one word. Beautiful, utter utter dross. I hated snoop under neptunes beats just so commerical and nowt to say, and under the no limit stuff as well. That album was wank.

Snoop needs to ber the west coast g he is not commerical bullshit that he was under master p and with neptunes.

I have no problem with the neptunes, clipse are cool, Nore had some good neptunes beats, odb, kelis, busta, rocye etc etc. Just really not with snoop.(other then vato)

True, for many people the Beastie Boys represented the first example of white folks being involved in rap.

BB:)

And for many their entry was a bad, bad thing.

I was in the bemused crowd at Brixton when those tossers did the whole cage dancers and dancing penis thing. Quite a sad day really, not helped by Cool J's shagging bed routine...

Would have to agree with pretty much all mentioned so far

one thats missing:

The Goats - Tricks of The Shade

Classic
:)

I wouldn't go that far. It was one of the poorer tracks on the album I thought; clearly engineered for the charts, annoying hook intended to burn Snoop's name into the public conciousness, basically a decent marketing ploy to persuade new fringe listeners that hadn't heard him on The Chronic (and maybe weren't that into hip hop) to go and buy the album, where the decent stuff lay - Gin n Juice, Serial Killa and Pump Pump being the stand outs.

Matter of opinion I suppose. I just always think it was one of those rare occassions when an outstanding MC or singer's voice was made for an outstanding backing track, resulting in something greater than the sum of its parts.

On the Neptunes, I don't have a problem with them either, other than Pharrell's gigantic ego, but as producers they're sound. In my eyes though they'll always be very much Virginia's second hip hop couple behind the immortal Missy and Timbaland.

No one's mentioned this guy, yes, great album. Okay not political as Public Enemy Fear of a Black Planet or as "street" as NWA. But still my favourite album of the genre.
