The makers' plate reads: J. Stone & co. Ltd, engineers, deptford london s.e.
Googling for these chaps shows that they made lots of stuff which has lasted an amazingly long time but records seem to cease in about 68 when it became obvious to everyone except themcolin37400 said:The makers' plate reads: J. Stone & co. Ltd, engineers, deptford london s.e.
that making high quality products that last 100's of years and still function perfectly after that time is a recipe for going bust and they should have incorporated more shoddy workmanship into stuff that they wrote their name on. Some people huh? You try to teach them about capitalism and with they listen? Will they bollocks!
I was born in Helix Road and my family had lived there since the 30s. I was always told it was an air raid siren. However, it may have been adapted from a preious use. I got into trouble when I was a child for tying someone to it and leaving her there....
Well, my auntie shouldnt have really given a 11 year old a pair of police issue handcuffs should she....Greek myth: Leander swam the Hellespont straits (in Turkey) to get to his lover Hero. But she let the light out ... and, losing his way, he drowned. Lord Byron made it across in 1810

There's always Wikipedia -or better Ovid. Or Ovid by Ted Hughes.

and what of Leander?![]()
Leander was another Greek living in what is now Turkey - fell in love with Hero - virgin priestess living in a tower on the European side of the Hellespont and swam over to her every night until a storm blew out the light she displayed on top of a tower to guide him and he drowned. I think Byron re-created the swim in 19th century
Just needs a few murals.![]()
